Vandiperiyar: Periyar, Plantations and Pilgrim Routes
Accommodation in Vandiperiyar
Vandiperiyar is located 836 m above sea level and is an important trading centre. It is also a stop along the Sabarimala pilgrimage route. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between local attractions, nature themes and pilgrimage routes. This will help you first decide whether Vandiperiyar itself, the landscape or the route to Sabarimala should shape your stay.
River, Garden and Plantations
The Periyar flows through the centre of Vandiperiyar on its way to the Idukki Reservoir. The river is therefore a geographical feature right in the town. The Flower Garden in Vandiperiyar includes a rose garden as well as numerous orchids, anthuriums and other flowering plants that thrive in the cool climate. Alongside the river, the garden adds its own botanical highlight. If you are planning a visit, check access in advance.
Vandiperiyar also has numerous tea, coffee and pepper plantations. These plantation crops offer a different focus from the flowering plants in the Flower Garden. When choosing your destination, consider whether you are more interested in the garden’s botanical diversity or the plantations as a landscape feature.
Routes to Sabarimala
Two routes lead from Vandiperiyar to Sabarimala. One passes through Kozhikkanam, Pullumedu, Uppupara and Uralkuzhi Theertham. The other leads from Vandiperiyar to Mount Estate; from there, pilgrims must continue on foot to Sannidhanam. Vandiperiyar is also a stop along the Sabarimala pilgrimage route.
The two options differ in their stated routes: the first includes four stops, while the alternative involves walking from Mount Estate. Before travelling, check current access and transport options so you can take these conditions into account when planning.
Gavi and the Surrounding Area
Possible activities in Gavi include trekking, wildlife viewing, outdoor camping in specially erected tents and night safaris. Check in advance which of these are available at the time of your visit. Trekking offers a different focus from wildlife viewing or a night safari.
Gavi is 14 km southwest of Vandiperiyar, 28 km from Kumily and close to Thekkady. Vandiperiyar, in turn, is about 18 km from Thekkady. These distances help distinguish Gavi and Thekkady as separate destinations in the area: Gavi lies southwest of Vandiperiyar and is also located in relation to Kumily, while Thekkady is given as an approximate distance from the town.
