Vadakara: Coast, Culture and History
Accommodation in Vadakara
Vadakara brings together coastal scenery, cultural history and connections to regional folklore. For planning your trip, these themes can be clearly distinguished: the coastal landscape, historic sites in Vadakara and temples in the surrounding area. When looking for a hotel in Vadakara, these highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests. The following sections show how these interests relate to the destination and its surroundings.
Coastal Scenery and Picnic Spot
At Vadakara Beach, the Kottakkal River meets the Arabian Sea, and the sunset can also be seen from the beach. Vadakara Beach Park is a picnic spot for friends and families. This gives the coastal theme two distinct aspects: the scenery along the beach and the park’s appeal as a picnic spot. When deciding which aspect of Vadakara’s coast interests you most, you can weigh these features separately.
Temples and Poorakkali
One temple in the surrounding area is Lokanarkavu Temple in Memunda, 4 km from Vatakara. It is in Kozhikode district, in the North Malabar region of the state of Kerala. The folk dance Poorakkali is performed there during festivals. For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between the location and the occasion: Memunda is where the temple is located, while Poorakkali is associated with festivals. If the dance is important to your trip, check the festival dates in advance.
Thacholi Othenan: Ballads, Temples and Kalari
Vadakara is considered the birthplace of the legendary warrior Thacholi Othenan; his legacy is closely connected with the Vadakkanpattu ballads of North Malabar. Two other locations tell different parts of this story. Sree Thacholi Manikoth Temple is 2 km from Vadakara and was once Othenan’s residence. The ancestral home has been completely destroyed; today, only a small temple dedicated to Thacholi Othenan, Kelu Kurup and Komaka Kurup remains there. Thacholi Manikkoth is a different place: a Kalari where Othenan once trained and which is considered a significant attraction in Vadakara. The ballads also place Othenan’s story within the cultural context of North Malabar. Thus, these connections focus on a historic residence and its dedication on the one hand, and the story of his training on the other.
Old Town and Regional Folklore Circuit
The old town also gives Vadakara a historical connection: Thazhe Angadi was once a spice-trading centre for Tipu Sultan. This trading history adds another dimension to the accounts of Othenan. The history of Tipu Sultan and Thazhe Angadi differs from the biographical connections to Othenan: here the focus is on the spice trade, while there it is on the warrior, the ballads, his residence and his training. On a broader regional scale, the Folklore Circuit extends from Vadakara in Kozhikode district to Thalassery and includes six destinations. This makes it possible to distinguish local historical connections from the regional folklore framework: Thazhe Angadi places the trading history in the old town, while the Circuit extends beyond Vadakara.
