The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary gives Thattekad’s nature offering a clear focus: birdwatching, wetlands, and different types of trails. Two questions can help with planning your trip: Would you mainly like to watch migratory birds, and are you interested in a guided or self-guided trail? October to March is considered the best time to visit for migratory birdwatching. The season and tour format answer different planning questions.

Habitats and species diversity

The habitats of the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary include lagoons and swamps formed by the reservoir of the Bhoothathankettu Dam. Their origin in the reservoir is a specific landscape feature of the sanctuary’s wetlands. If you consider the landscape as well as wildlife when choosing a destination, you can view the lagoons and swamps as a distinct part of Thattekad’s natural character.

The sanctuary is home to more than 270 bird species, 15 amphibian species, 34 mammal species, 47 fish species, and 30 reptile species. These species counts may change as further surveys are carried out. The range therefore extends beyond birdlife and includes several animal groups.

Season and activities

October to March is considered the best time to visit for migratory birdwatching. If you want to travel to Thattekad specifically to see migratory birds, this period offers a concrete guide to choosing your travel dates. The sanctuary also offers opportunities for trekking and nature walks. These activities have a different focus from targeted migratory birdwatching: you can consider the choice of travel dates separately from whether you would rather include a walk or trekking in your time in nature.

The named trails

The Black Baza Trail is a three-hour guided birdwatching trail that goes into the sanctuary’s core. Its duration is a practical aid for planning your time: you can account for the three hours as a distinct part of your day. It is also guided, unlike the self-guided Salim Ali Bird Trail. If you are choosing based on time required and guided participation, this trail provides both details in one place.

The Salim Ali Bird Trail is a self-guided trekking program for day visitors and includes a visit to the Butterfly Garden and the Interpretation Centre. It combines a self-guided format with two named stops. Compared with the Black Baza Trail, the trails differ both in their format and in the components described. If these stops are important to you, you can consider them as specific selection criteria.

The Trogon Trail is a birdwatching trail in Thattekkad. In direct comparison, this places the Black Baza Trail’s three-hour guided tour, the Salim Ali Bird Trail’s self-guided program with its stops, and the Trogon Trail’s birdwatching focus side by side. This makes it possible to distinguish the trails by duration, format, and stated focus.
