Leh combines a historic role in trade with striking architecture and cultural experiences. When planning your trip, the town offers several distinct points of interest: the history of caravan trade, architecture and viewpoints, religious imagery, or guided explorations of the Old Town.

Trade history and striking architecture

From the 17th century until 1949, Leh was a centre of caravan trade between Punjab and Central Asia, and between Kashmir and Tibet. These trade connections place Leh within an exchange between several regions and offer a different way to understand the town than its visible landmarks.

Leh Palace is an example of medieval Tibetan architecture. From its rooftop terrace, panoramic views extend across snow-covered peaks, Leh and its surroundings. Tsemo Fort (Victory Fort) dates from the 16th century, is visible from almost everywhere in Leh and forms a distinctive landmark along the ridge of Palace Ridge. The palace and fort offer different highlights: architecture and views at the palace, and a widely visible silhouette at the fort.

Shanti Stupa also offers panoramic views of Leh and the surrounding villages. Its reliefs depict the birth and death of Buddha, as well as his defeat of demons during meditation. At the stupa, views of the surrounding area sit alongside religious imagery.

Dosmochey: festival days and calendar

Dosmochey is celebrated every year at Leh Palace. Monks from various monasteries perform traditional sacred masked dances. The festival falls on the 28th and 29th days of the twelfth month in the Tibetan calendar. On the first day, the monks dance; afterwards, they offer ritual cakes called Chotpa to the Buddhas and their retinue. On the second day, the effigy and the Dosmo ritual structure are ritually burned. The sequence clearly distinguishes the two festival days. If you would like to include Dosmochey in your travel plans, check the exact date for your travel year.

Old Town routes and LAMO

The Old Town Heritage Walk follows Chutey Rantag and Baker’s Street, includes a visit to the Central Asian Museum and explorations of Leh Gate and the Old Town, and ends at LAMO and Leh Palace. If you would like to plan this walk, check the latest booking details with the provider.

Another LAMO format explores Old Town Leh and includes a guided visit to the LAMO Centre. If there is interest and enough time, a film may also be shown or a talk given. This option depends on interest and sufficient time.

Main Bazaar and Nowshar

In the heart of Leh are Main Bazaar and Nowshar, with eateries and curiosity shops. The shops sell gemstones and ritual religious items such as prayer wheels. These two areas are also concrete points of reference if you would like to include Leh’s urban offerings in your travel plans alongside its architecture and culture.
