Gulmarg combines seasonal skiing with temples, a church and historical connections from different eras. You can first decide whether seasonal activities, local history or the surrounding landscape should be the focus of your visit.

Skiing and Mountain Views

During the snowy months, Gulmarg offers skiing on powdery slopes and challenging terrain. If that is the reason for your trip, the seasonal conditions are among the most important points to consider when planning. A two-phase cable car runs from Gulmarg to Apharwat Peak and offers views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. If you plan to take the cable car, check the schedule before your trip.

Temples, a Church and Local History

The Maharani Temple has a red roof and stands on a small hill. It is said to have been the royal temple of the Dogra dynasty; this historical connection has been reported, but is not certain. It is dedicated to Shiva and the goddess Parvati. Its visible appearance, dedication and uncertain association with the dynasty offer three different ways to explore the temple's history.

St. Mary's Church is a gray stone church from the Victorian era. It has stood for more than a century and is located near the Gulmarg Golf Course. The Golf Course was founded in 1911, when the British established it during their stay in Gulmarg. The church and the Golf Course can therefore be viewed through different historical reference points: the church through its architecture and age, and the Golf Course through its founding year and the British presence.

The area's institutional history has its own point of reference in time. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) was established in Gulmarg in 1968 by India's Ministry of Tourism as a time-limited project called the Gulmarg Winter Sports Project (GWSP). Alongside the founding of the Golf Course in 1911, this offers a chronological comparison: the two dates mark different phases of local history, while the project name itself refers to winter sports.

Landscape and Finding Accommodation

The surrounding area also helps put Gulmarg in context. The Ferozepur Nallah, also known as Shinmahinyu, runs through valleys between Chinamarg and Nurpur Pass, about 15 kilometers from the main town of Gulmarg. Both details are relevant for finding your bearings: the approximate distance is from the main town, while the two place names frame the route through the valleys.

Then compare the specific hotel offers and check their details for your travel dates. The sights and activities provide a framework for deciding on your destination; which hotel suits your stay depends on your own requirements.
