The Ridge is the centre of public life in Shimla and the setting for fairs, festivals and other events. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: cultural sites, walking and hiking trails, viewpoints, and seasonal winter sports. First consider which of these will shape your trip before choosing a hotel location.

Culture, History and Religious Sites

The Himachal State Museum in Shimla preserves the history of the northern state and presents its cultural heritage; its collection includes Indian miniatures. The Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla is housed in a building originally called Viceregal Lodge. The Gaiety Theatre is a centre of cultural activity in Shimla and a replica of an old British theatre. The museum collection, building and theatre offer different cultural highlights.

Religious sites add another dimension. The Sankat Mochan Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Hanuman and was founded in 1950; it is located on the Kalka–Shimla National Highway (NH-22) near Tara Devi. The Jakhoo Temple is known for the world’s largest statue of the god Hanuman. Jakhoo Hill is the highest peak in Shimla city. Prospect Hill combines the role of a scenic viewpoint with that of a place of worship, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains.

Trails, Views and the Railway

The climb from The Ridge to Jakhoo Temple is 2 km long and takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The distance and estimated duration help with planning your schedule; the time is only an estimate. Summer Hill is a scenic spot on the Shimla-Kalka railway line, offering shady walking trails in peaceful surroundings. Chadwick Falls in Shimla has a hiking trail through the area around the waterfall. For the climb to Jakhoo, the distance and estimated duration help with planning your schedule; Summer Hill is known for its shady walking trails, while Chadwick Falls offers a trail through a waterfall setting.

The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train also offers a clear sense of scale: it covers almost 96 km and passes through more than 100 tunnels and over 800 bridges. Summer Hill is on the Shimla-Kalka railway line. This presents a location along the railway line and figures for the entire train route as two distinct perspectives on the railway.

Excursions in the District and Seasonal Activities

Kufri is a small hill resort in Shimla district and, together with Chail and Shimla, forms Himachal Pradesh’s well-known Golden Triangle. Kufri is also a starting point for treks to Fagu, Shimla, Manali and Rewalsar. Nearby is Fagu, known for its apple orchards, cultivated fields and the snow-covered Himalayas in the background. The area is popular with trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers. A named starting point for treks and nearby landscape features therefore offer different ways to explore nature and hiking.

For winter sports, consider Narkanda: it is one of India’s oldest ski resorts, and its slopes are suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers. On designated ski slopes, certified ski instructors introduce learners to skiing from January to March. Shimla also has a natural ice rink. The skating season normally begins in early December and lasts until February; operating dates may vary depending on conditions. If you plan your trip for this period, check the specific dates before your visit.

Choose a Hotel Location Based on Your Travel Interests

If your focus is on cultural sites and viewpoints in Shimla, your choice of hotel location will differ from what it would be if you are planning treks from Kufri or skiing in Narkanda.
