Ribandar: River Landscape and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Ribandar
Ribandar lies on the Mandovi and brings together a distinctive river landscape and traces of history in its townscape. Three themes can help guide your choice of destination: its location by the water, the ferry connections, and the history of its churches and houses. Ribandar can thus be described not only through a single attraction, but also through its surroundings and the routes that lead onward from here.
Getting to Ribandar and routes around it
One way to reach Divar is by taking the ferry at the Ribandar ferry wharf. A ferry to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on the island of Chorao also departs from the same landing. The sanctuary is located on Chorao in the Mandovi River, and therefore in the vicinity of Ribandar. If you plan to use these ferry connections during your stay, check the schedule before travelling.
Another point of reference is the old road route to Old Goa, which passes through Ribandar. The ferry connections and the road route offer different options for planning: one leads to destinations on the islands, while the other passes through Ribandar on the way to Old Goa. Together, they give an impression of how the town is set within its river and road landscape, without implying any particular itinerary.
River landscape on the Mandovi
The village lies on the Mandovi River. The Rio De Ourem separates Ribandar from Panjim and forms a large marshy estuary along the Mandovi. The river and estuary describe different aspects of the surroundings: the Mandovi defines Ribandar’s location, while the Rio De Ourem separates it from Panjim and shapes the estuary’s marshy landscape. Those interested in the landscape and waterways will find more here than just a place name by the river; Ribandar’s location is also defined by the interplay of these named waterways.
The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorao is also nearby. Its location on an island in the Mandovi provides a distinct point of reference in Ribandar’s surroundings. The ferry connection there starts at the Ribandar ferry wharf, so it is useful to take the schedule into account when planning. This allows you to consider the river setting, the town of Ribandar, and the sanctuary on Chorao as connected, yet geographically distinct, aspects of the area.
Historic houses and churches
Historic houses stand along the roadsides in Ribandar, bearing witness to the village’s former elite society. This society included Portuguese nobles who settled in Ribandar. The houses thus point to the town’s earlier history and the people who lived there. For a walk around the area, this offers a different perspective from the river landscape: here, the focus is on the historic townscape. Mentioning the houses describes their significance to Ribandar’s history; it does not mean that the buildings are open to visitors.
The Igreja De Nossa Senhora de Ajuda, known as the Church of Our Lady of Help, is also associated with a historical event. On March 14, 1554, a cannon salute was fired for the body of Saint Francis Xavier; the church is associated with this salute. Its shape is reminiscent of a ship. This church therefore combines a specific historical connection with a distinctive architectural description. The date of the cannon salute places it in time, while the comparison to a ship describes its shape.
Distinct from this is the earliest chapel in Ribandar: it was built between 1551 and 1554 and dedicated to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. This period falls within the years also mentioned in connection with the history of the Igreja De Nossa Senhora de Ajuda. However, the two accounts concern different religious buildings and different historical associations. Those interested in Ribandar’s history can therefore take into account both the early history of the chapel and the church’s association with the memory of the cannon salute.
When looking for a hotel in Ribandar, you can consider which of these aspects of the destination matters most for your stay: its location on the Mandovi, the connections via the ferry wharf, or the historic townscape. The information about Ribandar provides a concrete point of reference without presuming a particular type of accommodation or specific hotel amenities.
