Arambol: Harmal Beach and Church History
Accommodation in Arambol
Arambol offers three distinct points to consider when planning a stay: access to Harmal Beach, the watersports areas designated in a notice, and the history of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Access to Harmal Beach
Cars cannot access Harmal Beach. Narrow lanes lead down to the beach from the higher coastal paths; the final stretch is on foot down a slope. If you are planning a beach visit, factor in this walk and the incline as part of getting there. This is a practical planning point if a beach visit is among your planned activities in Arambol.
Watersports areas according to the notice
A notice issued by the Government of Goa on January 6, 2022, designates an area for kayaking and surfing at Arambol Beach beside the 21 Coconut Restaurant, 120 meters to the right of the lifeguard tower. Only non-motorized activities are permitted there; kayaks must be used with a guide. Another area is designated at Surf Wala in Girkar Vaddo. For this area, the same notice lists jet ski and boat rides, inflatable banana rides and bumper rides, as well as winch parasailing. The requirements for non-motorized activities and using a guide apply to the first area. Check the current local rules and operations before your trip.
The history of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Arambol is considered the first parish church in the Pernem area. The first church in Arambol was built in 1780 and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. In 1841, it was rebuilt and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1878, part of the façade was removed and replaced with an elaborately decorated façade. The three dates mark distinct stages: the construction and original dedication, the rebuilding and new dedication, and a later alteration to the façade. Together, they form a timeline that helps place the church’s historical development in context.
What matters when looking for a hotel
The three topics have different time frames. Access to Harmal Beach is described as a permanent feature, while the information about the church concerns historical developments. The watersports areas, by contrast, are designated in a notice dated January 6, 2022; it is therefore advisable to check the current local rules and operations before your trip. If you are looking for hotels in Arambol, you can use these distinctions to plan your stay: consider whether beach access, watersports, or church history will shape your visit the most, and take into account the relevant route, historical context, or requirements mentioned.
