Delhi brings together historic architecture, museums, handicrafts and designed green spaces. When planning your trip, you can focus on different themes, such as architectural history, collections, markets or parks.

Architecture between Tower, Tomb and Fort

Qutb Minar is a 72.5-metre-high tower made of red sandstone in Delhi. The Qutb Minar archaeological area includes the Alai-Darwaza Gate, built in 1311; Quwwatu'l-Islam, in the same area, is considered the oldest mosque in northern India. These sites reveal different features of the archaeological area: the tower, gate and mosque.

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi was the first garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent. The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace-fortress of Shahjahanabad, the new capital of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Its pavilions combine Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions. When planning your trip, you can explore different themes: the tomb's architectural form, the archaeological structures, or the function and design of a palace-fortress.

Museums, Art and Handicrafts

The National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, displays more than 100 life-size exhibits from Indian Railways. The Fairy Queen locomotive was built in 1855 and is considered one of the best-preserved steam locomotives of its time. The museum also offers rides on a children's railway and a monorail; check the current operating status of these attractions before your visit.

The National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi displays contemporary Indian art as well as paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the Craft Museum, working craftspeople contribute to its rural atmosphere. The National Children's Museum regularly holds classes and workshops in performing and creative arts.

Dilli Haat INA combines the atmosphere of a traditional rural haat market with handicrafts, food and cultural activities. It features rotating stalls run by registered craftspeople from across India, with stall spaces allocated for 15 days at a time. This makes the market a different way to experience handicrafts than a museum collection: food and cultural activities are also part of the market experience described here.

Gardens and Green Spaces

The Garden of Five Senses is a public recreational space designed for interaction and exploration. It includes Khas Bagh, a formal garden inspired by Mughal gardens and featuring water channels, as well as an open exhibition area for art displays and workshops. Garden design and art activities are different features of this recreational space.

Buddha Jayanti Park is located on the Delhi Ridge and features a Buddha statue on an island with a Parikrama path around it. Sunder Nursery is a 90-acre park adjacent to Humayun's Tomb in New Delhi. Following landscape and conservation work, it opened to the public in 2018. When planning, you can choose between formal garden design, a path around an island statue and a park with a conservation history.
