Diu: History and Coastal Landscapes
Accommodation in Diu
Diu brings together a variety of travel experiences: historic buildings and collections, as well as beaches and striking rock formations. If you are looking for a hotel in Diu, this distinction can help you plan the focus of your trip. Fort, church, museum and Chakratirth Beach shape the character of Diu; nearby coastal and cave landscapes round out the options.
History Around Diu Fort
Diu Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1535. It is regarded as a witness to numerous battles and important historical events, and as a symbol of the island’s strategic importance. The fort lies on the island’s eastern coast: the sea surrounds it on three sides, and a channel on the fourth. This setting makes the water boundary an essential part of its historic character. St. Thomas Church was built within the fort in 1598; it was the first parish church there. The fort and church therefore offer different historical perspectives: strategic importance and its former role as the first parish church.
Museum: Building and Collection
The Diu Museum is housed in a Portuguese mansion dating from the 16th century. It displays intricate carvings, antique coins, ceramics and textiles, as well as shells, corals and other marine life found in Diu. The museum thus brings together two areas of interest: craft-based works and objects on the one hand, and the region’s marine life on the other. Unlike the fort, whose significance is shaped by its strategic island location, the focus here is on the building and collection. For your travel plans, this offers a cultural perspective different from the history of the fort and church.
Chakratirth Beach and the INS Khukri Memorial
Chakratirth Beach is centrally located beside the city of Diu and is also known as Sun Set Point. The INS Khukri Memorial, a replica of the naval ship INS Khukri, stands on a rise by the beach; the memorial was inaugurated on 15 December 1999. The decommissioned naval ship Khukri (P49) is a separate vessel: it is moored at the jetty opposite the Diu Collectorate. Among other things, its guns and gun housings, a turret, radar, furniture and engines have been preserved on board. You can visit the naval vessel INS Khukri Vessel daily from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check the current visitor regulations with the relevant authority before your visit.
Coastal Spots Nearby
Nearby is semicircular Nagoa Beach, 8 kilometers from Diu. Visitors can swim there or relax on the soft sandy beach. The Naida Caves are also nearby; sunlight filters through fissures in the rock and illuminates the rugged surfaces. The beach and caves therefore offer distinctly different natural experiences: at Nagoa Beach, the focus is on water and sand; in the Naida Caves, it is on light, rock and the surfaces revealed by them.
