The Shiva Temple in Gandai (Tikari Para) was built in the 13th or 14th century and is known for its fine architectural design. It makes a striking starting point for a trip where temples, former princely rule, museums and traditional musical forms appeal to different interests. Natural sites with caves and water are also among Rajnandgaon's many facets. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, the focus you want for your days can help guide your choice: history and architecture, religious sites or landscapes.

Temples, Palaces and Museums

A different note awaits you in Ghatiyari: the newly excavated Shiva Temple there was built in the 11th or 12th century. Only the ground plan and remnants of the shrine have survived. Its present state of preservation therefore differs considerably from the fine architectural design for which the temple in Gandai is known.

Rajnandgaon's princely palace is a large palace from the former princely state. Today, it is used as Government Digvijay College; the Triveni Museum is located in the rear section. Its upper floor is divided into three areas. Muktibodh lived in the northern area of the museum. Rajnandgaon's palaces, streets and historic remains illustrate the culture and splendor of a bygone era. Rajnandgaon also offers heritage routes that trace its history and architectural past.

Pandadah, too, combines a religious building with historical significance: it is home to a Jagannath Temple, and the town was the capital of the princely state of Rajnandgaon under the Bairagi kings. At Narmada Kund, the temple features the Maratha Panchayat style. In Khairagarh, Indira Arts and Music University brings together music and visual arts; an archaeological museum is also located there. The Rajnandgaon Archaeological Museum is considered one of the state's older archaeological institutions.

Music, Dance and Festivals

Local music and dance forms in Rajnandgaon district include Raut Nacha, Dewar Nacha, Panthi, Soowa, Padki and Pandwani. Pandwani is a well-known musical form there for singing the Mahabharata. These traditions give the cultural side of the trip a distinct focus alongside temples and architectural history.

Hareli is a festival celebrating greenery, observed in the month of Savan. During the festival, farmers worship agricultural tools and cows. Another seasonal highlight is the hilltop Bamleshwari Temple in Dongargarh: a large fair is held there during Shardishya and Vasanthi Navaratri. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance.

Caves, Springs and Water

At Dongareshwar Mahadev, water flows year-round through natural caves and rocks; the water flow is about 100 feet below the surface. Narmada Kund is a natural water source and also a water reservoir. The two sites thus offer different features of water in the landscape.

Mandeep Khol near Thakurtola has a natural cave and a water source. Near Ambagarh Chowki, there is also a natural cave, as well as Lion Pond lake. These landscape sites complement the temples and historic places with nature-focused options for planning your trip.

Travel Planning Guide

When choosing accommodation, it makes sense to first decide which places match your interests. Those prioritizing temples and architectural history will have different priorities from those planning to visit museums, experience music traditions or explore natural sites.
