Barpeta combines a rich Satra history with the tradition of the Doul Festival. Transport connections are also important when planning your stay: buses run to Barpeta from several places, while the district headquarters is not directly connected to a railway station. If you are looking for a hotel in Barpeta, you can consider two questions together: Which cultural themes would you like to explore, and which travel option suits your plans?

Satras and cultural heritage

Patbaushi Satra was founded by Shrimanta Sankardeva. It preserves some items used by the gurus, as well as Sachipat Puthis. Ganakkuchi Satra, in the town of Barpeta, also preserves some items used by the guru, as well as Sachipat Puthis. Baradi Satra developed into a centre of learning from which Sankarite culture spread widely. The Holi-Geet add a musical tradition to these historical connections: they are choral songs that originated at Barpeta Satra, spread throughout the state and are sung during the Doul Festival. Their focus differs: Patbaushi is associated with Sankardeva’s founding of the Satra, Baradi with learning and cultural influence, and the Holi-Geet with singing during the Doul Festival.

Shri Mahapurush Madhavadeva founded Sundaridiya Satra, which is located near the town of Barpeta. Ganakkuchi Satra, by contrast, is in the town of Barpeta. This makes it possible to distinguish geographically between a local Satra and a point of interest in the surrounding area.

Barpeta in the wider context of Assam

The wider destination of Assam offers additional cultural and natural themes in their own right. Majuli, the world’s largest river island, is surrounded by the Brahmaputra. The Satras on Majuli preserve Sattriya dance, literature, Bhaona theatre, mask-making and boat-building. The Charaideo necropolis contains 90 Moidams; the Charaideo Moidams are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consist of the burial mounds of Ahom kings. The Tai-Ahom rituals Me-Dam Me-Phi, the worship of ancestors, and Tarpan, the offering of libations, are also practised there. Kaziranga National Park is a major landscape attraction: it lies in the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon and Biswanath, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 because of its natural environment, and is also a tiger reserve. These examples broaden the perspective on Assam; Barpeta’s cultural character remains shaped by its Satras and the Holi-Geet.
