Xinjiang Between High Mountains, Desert and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Xinjiang
Xinjiang can be explored through a range of themes: high-mountain ecosystems, flower-filled meadows and desert landscapes sit alongside archaeological sites, musical traditions and winter sports. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, your main interest can be a useful starting point for planning. The examples below show the natural and cultural themes that shape Xinjiang.
Mountain Ecosystems, Grassland and Desert
Xinjiang Tianshan is a serial World Heritage Site comprising four components and covering a total area of 606,833 hectares. The Bogda component lies in eastern Xinjiang, at the northern foot of Bogda Peak. It represents the mountain ecosystems of the eastern Tianshan as a “wet island” in an extremely arid continental environment. This contrast shows how sharply the mountain ecosystem stands out from its dry surroundings.
Biodiversity is another defining feature: the Bogda component provides a habitat for snow leopards, Tianshan red deer and the snow lotus plant. Xinjiang Tianshan also provides a habitat for relict species, as well as many rare, endangered and endemic species. These species are one reason to view the landscape not only as a mountain scene, but also as a habitat.
Other landscapes have different characteristics. Kalajun Grassland in Tekes County is a typical natural alpine grassland with flower-filled mountain meadows. Kanas Scenic Area lies in the central section of the Altai Mountains in Xinjiang, in a border region adjoining Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia. Kumtag Desert Scenic Area, meanwhile, is a desert landscape closely bordering an oasis and known as “the desert in the city.” Together, alpine meadows, a mountain region in a border area and a desert at the edge of an oasis represent distinct natural themes.
Archaeological Sites and Cultural Traditions
The Kizil Caves are located in Kizil Township, Baicheng County, on Mingwuyitake Mountain. They were first carved into the rock in the 3rd century and hold an important place in the history of Buddhism in East Asia. They bring together a precisely identified location and a long historical perspective. Jiaohe Ancient City offers another view of cultural history: the city stood on an important Silk Road route, where different cultures came into contact.
Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam is a musical tradition widely practiced among Uyghur communities, with four main regional forms: Twelve Muqam, Dolan Muqam, Turpan Muqam and Hami Muqam. Performances combine singing and dancing with folk and classical music, as well as varied choreography, different musical styles and a wide range of instruments. Those interested in music and intangible cultural heritage can find a different way to connect with the region here than through its archaeological sites.
Karez offers a technical perspective. This ancient water system in the arid areas of Xinjiang channels groundwater using the natural gradient, without mechanical power. Its operating principle clearly differs from the themes of music and archaeology: the focus is on water conveyance and the use of the gradient. Tuyugou Scenic Area includes Tuyugou Village, Tuyugou Grand Canyon, Tuyugou Thousand Buddha Caves and Tuyugou Cultural Tourism Town. These components identify a village, canyon, caves and a cultural tourism town as distinct points of interest.
Winter Sports and Self-Drive Routes
A 2024 report from Xinjiang lists 101 ski resorts and five state-recognized ski tourism resorts. Both figures are among the highest nationwide and are described as leading in China. Winter sports therefore form a distinct focus alongside the landscape and cultural themes.
Self-drive routes may also be useful when planning a trip. Xinjiang’s 2024 official tourism program included the Duku Highway Scenic Route among its self-drive tourism routes. A World Heritage Route is also among Xinjiang’s official routes. The names alone suggest different emphases: one is explicitly described as a scenic route, while the other includes a World Heritage reference in its name. When planning, you can therefore first consider whether landscapes, cultural heritage or winter sports are your main interest.
