Tianjin between urban history, science and the coast
Accommodation in Tianjin
A stay in Tianjin can focus on urban history, science or the coast. Museums, historic buildings and cultural traditions offer different perspectives, while Dongjiang Bay Beach on the Bohai Sea adds another dimension to the city. As you plan, consider which of these themes interests you most.
Urban history and cultural sites
The three permanent core exhibitions at the Tianjin Museum cover Tianjin’s history from the end of the Paleolithic to the middle and late Qing dynasty (1636–1912). The museum brings together collections, preservation, research, exhibitions and education. As an important public cultural institution, it is also a window for international cultural exchange in Tianjin.
The Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao Memorial Hall is located in the Tianjin Water Park scenic area and covers 70,000 square meters. Its exhibitions focus on Zhou Enlai’s life, as well as Deng Yingchao and the women’s movement in 20th-century China. They also include a 1:1-scale reconstruction of the West Flower Hall and an Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft, number 678. The memorial hall is a national patriotic education base, a national integrity education base and a national first-class museum.
The Italian Style Area highlights European elements and is developing into a comprehensive international district for tourism, business, leisure, entertainment and culture. It includes more than 30 former residences of historical figures and more than 100 Italian-style villas. The Guangdong Guild Hall offers a different historical focus: in 1985, it became China’s first specialized museum devoted primarily to opera.
Among Tianjin’s best-known intangible cultural heritage traditions are Yangliuqing New Year woodblock prints and Niren Zhang clay figurines. Together with the museums and historic buildings, they offer a glimpse into the city’s diverse forms of cultural heritage.
Science and maritime culture
The National Maritime Museum of China devotes a 23,000-square-meter exhibition hall to marine ecology and the environment, science education and interactive programs, as well as Chinese maritime culture and history. Its focus brings together natural history and the history of seafaring, complementing the more urban-history-focused themes of other Tianjin museums.
The Tianjin Natural History Museum holds 400,000 biological specimens and offers nature exploration, hands-on science experiences and science education. The Beijiang Museum is its predecessor. At the Tianjin Science and Technology Museum, more than 300 exhibits or exhibit groups are spread across five exhibition areas. There is also a Universal Theatre for science films and astronomy programs. The museum’s offerings also include themed exhibitions, lectures, performances and astronomy training. If a lecture, performance or astronomy program is important to your plans, check the specific schedule in advance.
Dongjiang Bay Beach on the Bohai Sea
Dongjiang Bay Beach scenic area is located on the Bohai Sea in the southeastern leisure and holiday area of Tianjin’s Dongjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone. It is China’s largest artificial beach. The beach is about 2 kilometers long and bordered by a breakwater about 3 kilometers long; the sea area covers about 2 square kilometers.
When planning your trip, you can choose among different themes: urban history and opera, collections and science, or coastal scenery. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tianjin, it may help to decide on the main focus of your trip first. Would you like to prioritize museums and cultural traditions, or is the coast your main interest? This will help you tailor your search to the interests that matter to you during your stay.
