When choosing Yinchuan as your destination, you can focus your interests on three distinct highlights: the imperial necropolis of the Western Xia dynasty, Haibao Pagoda and the wetland at Mingcui Lake. The first two offer a cultural and historical focus, while Mingcui Lake emphasizes conservation and environmental education. This distinction helps you organize the destinations and decide what to prioritize on your trip.

Western Xia Imperial Tombs: Necropolis and Landscape

The Western Xia Imperial Tombs are the imperial necropolis of the Western Xia dynasty. They comprise nine imperial mausoleums and 271 subordinate tombs, as well as a northern architectural complex and 32 flood-control structures. The different components give the site several facets: alongside the mausoleums and other tombs, architecture and flood control form part of its overall character. The clear distinction between imperial mausoleums and subordinate tombs also helps you understand the structure of the necropolis.

The location adds to the historical context: the Western Xia Imperial Tombs lie in front of the Helan Mountains, overlook the Yinchuan Plain and face the Yellow River. The mountains, plain and river thus form the landscape setting for the necropolis. This lets you distinguish the dynasty-related focus from the site's geographical context when planning your trip, without separating the two.

The Western Xia Imperial Tombs Visitor Area

A description of the visitor area published in 2025 divides it into two sections, separated by National Highway 110. To the west is the Western Xia heritage area, with on-site presentations of the ruins. To the east is a cultural tourism and service center. It includes the Western Xia Imperial Tombs Museum, a digital cultural creation experience center and a visitor center. The layout thus distinguishes the presentations of the ruins in the western section from the cluster of facilities in the eastern center. If you plan your visit around specific themes, this division offers a practical guide to the area's different highlights.

Haibao Pagoda, also known as the North Pagoda

Haibao Pagoda is located in Haibao Pagoda Temple in Xingqing District, Yinchuan. It was designated a Major National Protected Cultural Relic in 1961. The alternative name, North Pagoda, refers to the same pagoda. Unlike the necropolis, which comprises several elements, it is a different cultural point of interest: the focus here is a single structure with a clearly dated protected status. Haibao Pagoda thus complements the Western Xia Imperial Tombs with another cultural and historical highlight in Yinchuan.

Mingcui Lake: Wetland and Environmental Education

Mingcui Lake lies east of Yinchuan in Xingqing District and covers 589 hectares. It is a National Wetland Park and a nationally important wetland. In November 2023, it was added to the list of nationally important wetlands; it is also classified as a national 4A tourist attraction. These designations reflect both the wetland's protected status and its tourism classification.

Ecotourism and environmental education are among the main focuses at Mingcui Lake. Both support the protection and restoration of the wetland. This gives the site a different theme from the cultural attractions: the emphasis is on the wetland landscape and promoting its conservation. If you want to give greater weight to landscapes and environmental education when choosing destinations for your trip, Mingcui Lake offers a distinct point of interest in Yinchuan.
