Wuhai Between Lake, Desert and Culture

Wuhai Lake is a desert and lake area with a holiday resort near the urban area. In the surrounding area, the Wuhai Lake Recreation and Holiday Area has been rated as a recreation and holiday area at the autonomous region level and as a national AAAA-rated scenic area. Longyouwan National Wetland Park passed its acceptance inspection in December 2018; since then, wetland restoration and protection have been further strengthened. Jinshawan National Desert Park is also in the surrounding area: it is a National Desert Park in Haibowan District, Wuhai.

Seasonal Nature Observation

One nature experience tied to a specific time of year is watching red-billed gulls: every year, from late March to early April, groups of the birds can be seen on the water at Pier 1 in the Wuhai Lake Recreation and Holiday Area. Unlike general landscape experiences, this activity is limited to a short, recurring window. Calligraphy, Mining History and Theater

In Wuhai’s Haibowan District, Yueyu Book Bar is located in Calligraphy Square at the Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy Art Museum. Situated on the shore of Wuhai Lake, it offers space for reading, conversation, enjoying the view and relaxation. The museum regularly exhibits works by prominent Chinese calligraphers; individual exhibitions may change. The changing exhibition themes and the Book Bar’s role as a place to read and meet cater to different cultural interests.

At the Wuhai Coal Museum, a guide tells the story of Wuhai and its connection to coal mining, beginning with the campaign “万人上山夺煤大会战”. Wuhai’s ecological and cultural tourism areas also offer traditional theater forms such as Wuhai Errentai, as well as other performances of intangible cultural heritage. The cultural offerings range from stories about mining to traditional performing arts.

Planned Wine Experiences

A 2024 municipal plan for Sunlight Tianyu Winery includes wine tastings and grape-harvesting activities. Since these are planned offerings, check whether they are currently available and in season before planning a trip around them.
