Sha Tin – Hiking, Sports and Local History
Accommodation in Sha Tin
If hiking is an important part of your trip planning, the approximate duration of the D1 route is a useful guide. For a different focus, Sha Tin Wai Playground has specific sports and wayfinding facilities. Sha Tin Wai MTR Station is also on the Tuen Ma Line; check current service information before travelling.
Hiking from Sha Tin Wai: Duration and Route Access
The D1 Shui Chuen O–Monkey Hill hiking route takes about five hours. The route entrance is about a ten-minute walk from Sha Tin Wai MTR Station via Shui Chuen Au Street. The two time estimates describe different parts of the plan: around ten minutes on foot to the route entrance and about five hours for the hike itself. Plan for the hike to take up a longer block of time. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's route page was updated on 24 March 2025; it is a good idea to check the latest route details before setting out.
In the vicinity of Sha Tin Wai, the section between Sha Tin Pass and Beacon Hill on the D1 route is designated Section 5 of the MacLehose Trail. Hikers on this section can see wartime relics and learn about the history of that wartime period from an interpretive panel. Another historical reference is that part of the Kowloon Route ran from Sha Tin Pass down to Sha Tin Wai village. The two references highlight different aspects: the MacLehose section focuses on relics and their interpretation, while the Kowloon Route describes the historic route to the village.
Sports and Wayfinding Facilities at Sha Tin Wai Playground
Sha Tin Wai Playground has a football pitch for seven-a-side football. The facilities also include a spectator stand and floodlighting. Other specifically listed facilities may also be relevant to your plans: a drinking fountain, as well as men's and women's toilets with changing rooms. Information about the playground was updated on the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's website on 16 April 2026. If you need a particular facility, check for current information before your visit.
Wayfinding aids and additional facilities listed include an accessible toilet, a tactile guide path, tactile Braille information and a tactile orientation map. If any of these features are important for your visit, take them into account when planning and check for current information about the facility in advance. This makes it possible to consider the playground's individual features without confusing them with the longer hike planning.
