Kisoro: Nature and Culture in Southwestern Uganda
Accommodation in Kisoro
Kisoro lies in the far southwest of Uganda. Kisoro District borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda and covers 729.2 km². Of this, 662 km² is land, while 67.2 km² consists of open water and wetlands.
Cultural insights and organized visits
The four main ethnic groups in Kisoro District include the Bafumbira, Bakiga, Banyarwanda and Batwa. Organized visits give guests the opportunity to learn more about the Bafumbira and Batwa. If cultural learning is important to you, you can make these visits a focus alongside nature walks and birdwatching.
Nature walks and birdwatching
Nature walks take place both within and outside communities in Kisoro District. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the birdwatching areas in Kisoro District. In the gorge between Mount Sabinyo and Mount Gahinga, 79 bird species have been recorded in bamboo forest and afro-montane forest.
Lake Kagezi is also a place to explore in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are most interested in walks in the district, birdwatching or the places mentioned in the national park.
A wider look at the Western Region
For a broader perspective, it is also worth looking at the Western Region. There, Semuliki National Park covers more than 220 km² and is considered the only lowland rainforest in East Africa. Visitors can explore shaded trails in the park; check current trail conditions before visiting. Other natural features there include the Sempaya Hot Springs. Locally known as “the male” and “the female,” their waters bubble up and feature striking mineral deposits. Within the broader regional context of the Western Region, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Echuya Forest Reserve are also birdwatching areas. A total of 350 bird species have been documented in Bwindi Park, including 23 endemic species; 150 species have been recorded in Echuya Forest Reserve, including eight endemics. The history of Semuliki Forest Reserve is also part of the regional context: it was established in 1932 and designated a national park in 1993.
Other cultural destinations in the wider Western Region include the Eclipse Monument in Biharwe, Mugaba Palace and Tooro Kingdom Palace. Landscape destinations there include the Rubirizi Crater Lakes, Lake Nkugute, Mweya Peninsula and Kyambura Gorge Viewpoint. The Katwe salt mines and the ruins of the Kilembe mines are also attractions in this wider region.
