A mountain ksar in a cuesta landscape, Jurassic fossil traces and the Oued Dekouk wetland offer three distinct ways to explore Tatawin. The settlement and cave architecture of Chenini and the cultural heritage of Guermessa add to these attractions.

Ksour and Geological Traces

Ksar Ouled Soltane is a mountain ksar on Djebel Abiadh. It lies in a cuesta landscape above a valley shaped by jessour terraces. Together, the ksar, landform and terraced valley define the landscape here. The area contains a rich and diverse range of fossils from the Middle and Upper Jurassic. These finds are scientifically and educationally significant, giving the region’s geological heritage a distinctive depth of time.

Geology also features in the wider Tataouine travel area. In 2004, a geological tour was established starting at the museum in Tataouine. Its seven stops included the museum, Ksar M’rabtine (Geosite No. 15), the Beni-Ghedir Valley (Geosite No. 13), the prehistoric site with rock paintings at Ghombrassen, the Dinosaur Park (Geosite No. 10), the Berber village of Guermessa (Geosite No. 14) and the fossil plant site (Geosite No. 19).

Chenini: Views and Cave Dwellings

The heights near Chenini are at an elevation of 550 metres. From there, panoramic views extend across the El Ferch Plain, which they rise about 250 metres above. Chenini is still partly inhabited by a Berber-speaking population. The village is therefore shaped not only by its location but also by its continuing settlement.

At least three rows of cave dwellings lie on the southern slope of the Chenini spur, below a ksar citadel building. The settlement faces away from the El Ferch Plain. The arrangement of the dwellings and their position below the citadel give the village a distinctive architectural structure.

Guermessa and Its Landscape

The cuesta landscape of Guermessa overlooks the El Ferch Plain and the Oued el Guermessi valley. The plain contains scattered outcrops of sand and clay with fossil wood and vertebrate remains. The double cuesta has a front, a hill and a forehill; the landscape is of educational interest for geomorphological and sedimentological studies.

Guermessa’s cultural heritage includes a galaa, a ksar, a mosque, an oil mill, cave dwellings and necropolises. The site is abandoned and at risk of deterioration. Its architecture and geological formations offer two distinct perspectives on the same place: its built heritage on the one hand and the shape of its landscape on the other.

Oued Dekouk: Wetland and Protected Area

The Oued Dekouk valley is surrounded by sand dunes and forms a wetland with diverse fauna and flora. It is designated as a nature reserve and a Ramsar site. The protected area covers 5,750 hectares. It was established in 1994, designated as a nature reserve by decree in 2009, and declared a Ramsar site on 2 February 2012.

The Oued Dekouk area extends across parts of the Tataouine Sud and Remada delegations in the Tataouine Governorate. It can be reached via National Road 19 between Tataouine and Remada; tracks lead to various areas. Some sections can only be accessed on foot through dunes or marshy areas. When planning a visit, these different ways of getting around are part of the area’s character, along with the combination of dune landscape and wetland.

More Experiences in the Surrounding Region

In the wider area around Tataouine and Médenine, walks to various ksour in villages on the ridgelines are available. The flij also form part of the regional context: these are long strips which, when joined together, form nomadic tents. Their production is considered a traditional activity in the wider area around Tataouine and Médenine.

When planning your stay, you can weigh up the different highlights: settlement and architectural culture, geological formations and fossils, or the landscape of Oued Dekouk. This lets you choose experiences based on what interests you most about Tatawin.
