Turiani: Trails near Mkingu Nature Reserve
Accommodation in Turiani
Turiani provides a reference point for journeys towards Mkingu Nature Reserve. From here, visitors can continue north to the village of Maskati or reach the reserve via the village of Mhonda. Two hiking trails with different starting points and approximate walking times are in the surrounding area. For planning, it is therefore important to consider both your bearings in the region and the route of each trail: the Maskati–Kombora trail ends in Ubiri, while the Mhonda–Mafuta trail passes through several villages and continues to the campsite in Mafuta.
Getting your bearings around Turiani
A visitor leaflet from 2014 mentions continuing north from Turiani to the village of Maskati, as well as the route via Mhonda to Mkingu Nature Reserve. These two places are also the starting points for the hikes described here: Maskati for the Maskati–Kombora trail and Mhonda for the Mhonda–Mafuta trail. This helps distinguish regional orientation from the choice of hike. If you use these directions to plan a journey, check current conditions in advance.
Two hiking trails in Mkingu Nature Reserve
Maskati–Kombora hiking trail
A route description from 2017 mentions the Maskati–Kombora hiking trail. It begins in the village of Maskati and ends in the village of Ubiri; the walking time is about six hours. The named endpoint gives the route a clear destination, while the approximate duration provides useful guidance for planning your time. Around six hours on foot is a longer stretch, which you can allow for as a separate part of your itinerary. The stated walking time is approximate.
Mhonda–Mafuta hiking trail
The Mhonda–Mafuta hiking trail begins in the village of Mhonda, passes through Kwelikwiji, Mafuta, and Ubiri, and takes about seven hours. A newsletter from 2017 also describes the route as passing the Lusingiso waterfalls and continuing to the campsite in the village of Mafuta. The waterfalls are along the way; the trail then continues to the campsite. In addition to the starting point, this hike has several named villages and a notable natural landmark. This makes the route description more specific without changing the approximate walking time of about seven hours.
Planning differences
According to the stated estimates, the Mhonda–Mafuta trail takes about an hour longer than the Maskati–Kombora trail. You can also compare the options by their described waypoints: Ubiri is named as the endpoint for Maskati–Kombora, while the Mhonda–Mafuta description lists several villages along the way, the Lusingiso waterfalls, and the onward route to the campsite in Mafuta. If having a clearly named endpoint matters to you, Ubiri provides a reference point. If you want to take several place names and a waterfall into account when planning, the Mhonda–Mafuta description includes more such waypoints.
The information on getting your bearings from Turiani comes from a 2014 visitor leaflet; the two trail descriptions were published in 2017. Check current conditions before travelling. Before setting out on a hike, find out about trail conditions; for the Mhonda–Mafuta trail, this also applies to access to the campsite.
