Lindi offers two very different ways to explore the past: the geological history of the Tendaguru site and the history of the Swahili trading towns of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara. Fossils from the Late Jurassic period stand alongside ruins that tell stories of culture, religion and trade in the Indian Ocean. These themes give a trip through the region different focuses, without reducing its stories to a single era.

Tendaguru: Dinosaur Discoveries and Landscape

The Tendaguru site lies on a hill about 310 metres above sea level. Together with the surrounding landscape, it documents a significant period of geological history through evidence of life and the development of landforms in the rock strata. The site can therefore be understood through more than individual fossils: the landscape and its rock strata also contribute to its geological significance.

Scientific expeditions to Tendaguru uncovered dinosaur fossils from the Late Jurassic period. The fossil finds include theropods, ornithischians and sauropods. Between 1909 and 1913, the Tendaguru expedition carried out extensive investigations in the region. Almost 400 of the fossils recovered at Tendaguru, including 80 articulated skeletons, are kept at the Berlin Museum of Natural History. The story of the site thus ranges from traces of prehistoric life to later investigations and the preservation of recovered specimens.

When planning a trip, the geological and palaeontological perspectives offer two different ways to explore Tendaguru. Those particularly interested in dinosaur discoveries will find concrete points of reference in the fossil groups mentioned and the articulated skeletons. Those who want a broader understanding of the site can also consider its hilltop location and the development of landforms recorded in the rock strata.

Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara: Swahili History

The islands of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara bear exceptional witness to the spread of Swahili coastal culture, the Islamisation of East Africa and extensive, flourishing trade in the Indian Ocean from the Middle Ages to the modern era. In the broader context of Tanzania, Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara were Swahili trading towns. Their prosperity, particularly from the 13th to the 16th century, was based on control of trade in the Indian Ocean with Arabia, India and China. This context adds a more specific time period and the trade relationships associated with that prosperity to the broader historical picture.

At the northern end of Songo Mnara Island, the remains of five mosques, a palace complex and about 33 houses lie within enclosing walls. Coral stone and wood are the building materials named for the houses. On Kilwa Kisiwani, the Great Mosque is the focus of a different architectural detail: it is regarded as the oldest surviving mosque on the East African coast and has sixteen domed and vaulted bays. The two sites thus offer different architectural highlights within the same broader Swahili history.

When looking for hotels in Lindi, you can first consider which of these themes will shape your trip: the fossils and geological history of Tendaguru, or the trade history and architecture of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara. This can help you choose a destination based on the subjects you would like to explore in greater depth.
