Hai: Nature Destinations and Chagga Culture
Accommodation in Hai
Nature destinations and Chagga culture take center stage in Hai: Chemka Hot Spring is a natural attraction in the village of Chemka, in the Masama Rundugai administrative ward and Hai District. Machame adds local trails, caves, and hands-on cultural activities. The wider region offers additional types of excursions, with different routes and activities.
Nature Destinations and Trails
In Machame, an excursion along local trails leads to Ntondolo Cave, which is connected to Chagga history. A local guide tells stories about the site. Visitors can also explore the underground Ntondolo Chagga Caves. Nature and oral stories about the Chagga go hand in hand on this excursion.
Another excursion leads through lush banana plantations to Nkosalulu Waterfall. The route through the plantations is a defining feature of this tour, distinguishing it from the cave tour in Machame.
Cycling Tours and Activities in Machame
A two-hour guided cycling tour starts at the Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office. It passes through the village and banana and coffee farms, and continues to the Village Forest. In contrast, the excursion to Nkosalulu Waterfall follows a trail through banana plantations rather than taking a cycling route. The nature excursions mentioned here therefore differ both in how visitors get around and in their destinations.
Hands-on cultural activities are also part of the offerings in Machame. In a coffee-roasting workshop, visitors can take part themselves. In a Batiki session, they use wax and color to create patterns and take home a piece of batik fabric they made themselves. The session is offered year-round. At a weaving demonstration, guests can watch artisans at traditional looms and try weaving themselves under their guidance.
A guided tour of a stingless bee farm offers insights into beehives, sustainable beekeeping methods, and honey production. Guests can also plant a tree during their stay with Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism. Village elders lead storytelling sessions where guests learn about Chagga folklore. Traditional Chagga dances are also part of a visit to Machame: guests can join in and learn dance steps from the performers. Before your trip, confirm the availability of tree planting and the storytelling session, as well as the details of the bee farm tour, with the provider. Also ask whether the weaving activity is available and confirm the Batiki session in advance.
Excursions in the Wider Region
The Rundugai and Chemka Local Souvenir Center offers handmade souvenirs from the Maasai and Wapare. Visitors can also learn how local products are made. This is another way to explore local craftsmanship and how the products on offer are made.
A regional cycling tour goes to Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs, where visitors can swim in the natural pool. Another tour is a hike along the Mbuguni River through volcanic rock, bushland, and thicket to the Mgonga Chuma Natural Caves. The return route follows the river downstream before continuing to Kikuletwa Hot Springs for a swim. This hike combines a river landscape and a cave destination with a final swim, while the cycling tour goes to the springs.
