Discover Lambert's Bay
Accommodation in Lambert's Bay
Lambert's Bay offers several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: birdwatching at the Jakkalsvlei wetland, local history at the Sandveld Museum, and natural history exhibits at the Walkthrough Museum on Bird Island. If you are looking for a hotel, considering the main focus of your stay can help you assess the destination according to your interests.
Birdwatching at Jakkalsvlei
The Jakkalsvlei wetland lies on the northern edge of Lambert's Bay. There is a viewpoint with a picnic bench and a table; check their condition before your visit. From the viewpoint, you can observe the lower part of the wetland. Species that can be observed there include Black-winged Stints, South African Shelduck and Cape Teal. Wildlife sightings naturally vary, so these species are possible sightings, not a guarantee for any particular day of your visit.
The site of the old bird hide is considered the best place for birdwatching. When Jakkalsvlei is dry, large flocks of Kelp Gulls fly in from the coast and rest on the dry wetland floor. This is a different observation, clearly dependent on dry conditions, from the species you may see from the viewpoint in the lower wetland. It is therefore also important for your planning to know whether the wetland is dry.
Museums: local history and wildlife
The Sandveld Museum in Lambert's Bay features 15 exhibits. These include the history of the town and the gunboat HMS Sybille, which ran aground in 1901. Other topics include photography, fishing and the fishing community, books and Bibles, archaeology, a horse mill and agricultural implements, as well as clothing and embroidery from times gone by. The collection thus covers local history and fishing as well as archaeological, agricultural and textile topics. The year 1901 provides a specific historical reference point for the HMS Sybille exhibit. Check the museum's current visiting arrangements before setting out.
The Walkthrough Museum on Bird Island is located near Lambert's Bay. Among other things, it displays the skeletons of a Cuvier's beaked whale, a Cape fur seal, a Cape gannet and a Dusky Dolphin. Individual exhibits may change. Compared with the Sandveld Museum, the focus here is on a narrower natural history collection: named animal species are represented by their skeletons. The collections thus differ both in their themes and in the types of exhibits on display.
Points of interest for planning your trip
Jakkalsvlei combines a viewpoint with birdwatching opportunities that depend on the condition of the wetland. With its 15 exhibits, the Sandveld Museum spans topics from local history and fishing to archaeology and everyday objects. The Walkthrough Museum offers a different focus, displaying the skeletons of specific animal species. If you choose Lambert's Bay for your trip, you can weigh up whether wildlife observation, a wide-ranging collection or a natural history focus best matches your interests.
