Overberg between coast, fynbos and culture
Accommodation in Overberg
The Whale Trail is a multi-day hiking route through De Hoop Nature Reserve. Along the coast, there is also an opportunity to observe southern right whales. When planning a trip to Overberg, one practical question arises: should the focus be on hiking or on other nature and cultural experiences?
Hiking, fynbos and water
At Kogelberg Nature Reserve, fynbos and outdoor activities take centre stage. The reserve is known for the exceptional diversity and quality of its fynbos and is considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. A moderate mountain biking route runs for 22 kilometres through Kogelberg Valley and starts at the reserve’s administrative office. White-water kayaking is also permitted on the Palmiet River in the reserve each year. This offers different ways to experience the landscape: on foot, by bike or on the water.
Other nature destinations in the wider region
For more hiking ideas, it is worth looking at the wider Overberg District Municipality area. De Mond Nature Reserve has two hiking trails, taking about two and four hours respectively. The Damara Trail offers a different time commitment: this overnight hiking trail is 16.5 kilometres long, takes two days and runs from De Mond to Waenhuiskrans, also known as Arniston. The approximate walking times at De Mond can be compared with a multi-day hike as you consider how much of your trip you want to devote to hiking.
Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is also located in the wider Overberg District Municipality area. It is recognised and registered by UNESCO; more than 80 percent of the area consists of mountainous terrain. Agulhas National Park includes the southern tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Together, these destinations add a landscape and geographic dimension to the wider Overberg region, beyond its individual hiking trails.
Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to a unique colony of African penguins. A public boardwalk lets visitors observe the animals up close in their natural habitat. Remains of the infrastructure of the former Waaygat Whaling Station can still be seen at the site. A community restaurant next to Stony Point serves refreshments and meals during the day. For directions: access is via Porter Road in Betty’s Bay, off the R44 (Clarence Drive).
Museums and history in Overberg
The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum documents maritime history and shipwrecks along the dangerous coast of the southern Cape, as well as their influence on the development of the Overberg District Municipality. The Caledon Museum offers a different historical perspective: housed in a Victorian home, it displays artefacts and depictions from Caledon’s past. Its historical exhibitions cover the years 1840 to 1900. Together, the two museums offer different ways to explore history—through the maritime past and through Caledon’s own artefacts and depictions.
In the wider region, the restored Elim Heritage Centre provides information about the history of the town. The village of Elim has been declared a National Heritage Site. A visit to the Heritage Centre and the village’s special status adds another cultural and historical perspective to visits to the museums in Bredasdorp and Caledon.
Visiting and hotel planning
Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00; the last climb is scheduled for 16:00. Weather-related closures are possible. If you plan to climb the lighthouse, check before your visit whether it is closed.
When looking for a hotel in Overberg, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: multi-day hiking, cycling and kayaking, wildlife watching, or culture and the lighthouse. This lets you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
