Discover the Cape Winelands
Accommodation in Cape Winelands
In the Cape Winelands, you can tailor your hotel choice to different travel interests: hiking, mountain biking, scenic views, wine routes or historic architecture. The destinations differ both in theme and format. The Murludi Hiking Trail has two route lengths; Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve offers several activities, while Tulbagh’s Church Street features restored buildings in various styles. Start your search by asking what you want your stay to focus on.
Hiking and outdoor activities
The Murludi Hiking Trail in Tulbagh includes the 10-kilometre Elsbos Route and the 4-kilometre River Route. The well-maintained trails range from two-hour walks to full-day hikes. The two route lengths offer different options; you can also consider whether a walk or a full day of hiking fits your travel plans.
A permit, available from the farm office, is required to access the Murludi Hiking Trail. There is also ample parking, public toilets and drinking water. Access, trail and road conditions, as well as permit and facility arrangements, may change; check the latest information before your visit.
At Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, you can hike, mountain bike, picnic and enjoy panoramic views. This gives you a choice of different ways to get active, as well as taking a break outdoors and admiring the landscape. The historic Bain's Kloof Pass is also suitable for hiking. It offers views, indigenous fauna and flora, and crystal-clear rock pools. These features bring the landscape into focus alongside the hike itself.
Scenery and wine routes
The Cape Winelands District covers approximately 24,000 km². It consists mainly of farmland and indigenous fynbos vegetation, including proteas and erica species. The Breedekloof Wine Route links majestic mountains, fynbos and sparkling rivers. It offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, bass fishing and birdwatching. The route therefore offers more than hiking and cycling, also including fishing and birdwatching.
The Wellington Wine Route is compact, with its wine cellars a convenient drive from one another. If you plan to visit a winery, check its individual opening arrangements in advance, as they may change.
Architecture and getting there
Tulbagh’s Church Street features South Africa’s largest collection of restored buildings in the Cape Dutch, Edwardian and Victorian styles. These three styles give the street a distinct architectural focus. Historic Stellenbosch is considered the first access point to the district. The drive from Cape Town International Airport to Stellenbosch takes 20 minutes, although the actual journey time depends on traffic.
You can compare different criteria when choosing an excursion: the Murludi Hiking Trail routes are clearly distinguished by length. At Bain's Kloof Pass, the focus is on views, rock pools, and indigenous fauna and flora; Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve adds mountain biking and picnicking alongside hiking. This lets you plan according to your preferred route length or activity.
