Discover Riversdale
Accommodation in Riversdale
For your stay in Riversdale, you can weigh cultural attractions against a hike along a clearly defined route. The Julius Gordon Africana Centre (Versfeld House), the Old Jail and the Ukrainian Museum represent different collections and historical themes. The Sleeping Beauty Day Hiking Trail adds a 12-kilometre day hike to this selection. When choosing Riversdale as a destination, you can consider whether art and history or hiking should be the focus of your trip.
Culture and history in Riversdale
Built in 1880, the Julius Gordon Africana Centre (Versfeld House) houses the second-largest collection of paintings by Thomas Bowler in South Africa. It also features Khoisan rock paintings and stone tools, regional Africana furniture, and the history of Riversdale. The ranking refers to Bowler’s paintings; the other themes also connect the Centre to local history and regional culture. This allows you to view the collection both from the perspective of painting and through its local and regional themes.
The Old Jail contains a replica of the gallows, which was used only once in Riversdale’s history. The replica thus refers to a specific episode in the town’s history and offers a different focus from the art and collection themes of the Africana Centre.
The Ukrainian Museum at the Ha!Qua Youth facility displays traditional clothing, cultural artefacts, a mural from Crimea and the history of Ukraine. Unlike the Africana Centre, with its Riversdale and regional themes, it focuses on Ukrainian cultural history. Public visits are by appointment. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance whether an appointment is available.
Cat’s Paw Pottery is Robyn Learmonth’s pottery studio in Riversdale. It offers another cultural point of interest, this time focused on pottery. If you are considering a visit, check in advance what visiting options are available.
Road connection and hiking
Garcia’s Mountain Pass is relevant when planning your journey: it connects Riversdale with the R62. If you plan to use this route, check current road conditions before setting off.
The Sleeping Beauty Day Hiking Trail covers 12 kilometres from the Old Toll House to the ridge and back. The distance therefore includes the return journey, with the ridge as the turnaround point. Proteas and the rare Erica Blenna grow along the trail, among other plants. CapeNature also manages the Sleeping Beauty Day Trail, and a permit is required to use it. Check the current permit process before your visit so you can take this requirement into account when planning your day.
