Central Karoo offers a range of reasons to consider your interests when choosing a hotel: in Karoo National Park, you can choose from hikes, a mountain biking trail and wildlife viewing from your own vehicle. Museums in Prince Albert and Beaufort West explore the history of the towns and district, as well as subjects ranging from the Stone Age to medical history. Other options include a ghost walk at dusk, cooking classes by prior appointment and a guided tour in Laingsburg. You can plan your stay around outdoor activities, culture or a particular place.

Hiking, Cycling and 4×4 in Karoo National Park

Karoo National Park offers guided and unguided hikes, as well as a mountain biking trail. This lets you choose the activity and level of guidance that suit you: on foot, with or without a guide, or on a mountain bike.

The Pienaars Pass Trail is a 6 km 4×4 route to the park’s central plateau. For wildlife viewing, visitors drive their own vehicles along 60 km of tourist roads. The route focuses on reaching a destination in the park, while the other activity focuses on viewing wildlife along the way.

A Guided Tour in Laingsburg

Laingsburg offers a guided tour of the “Flood Route.” This differs from the hikes in Karoo National Park, which are available both with and without a guide. If the type of guidance matters to you, you can compare the tour and the hiking options based on this specific difference.

Museums in Prince Albert and Beaufort West

The Fransie Pienaar Museum in Prince Albert showcases the cultural and natural history of the town and district. Its Stone Age exhibition includes a rare, intact Khoekhoe clay pot found on the outskirts of Prince Albert. The museum thus connects the region’s history with a specific artefact and the place where it was found.

At the Beaufort West Museum, the Old Town Hall houses the Chris Barnard and Medical Science Exhibition. The museum’s Mission Church features a permanent exhibition about the Dutch Reformed Mission Congregation of Beaufort West and its forced removal in the late 1960s. The exhibitions therefore cover different subjects from those at the Fransie Pienaar Museum: one focuses on medicine and the history of a congregation, while the other covers the cultural and natural history of Prince Albert and the district.

Evening Walk and Cooking Classes in Prince Albert

The Prince Albert Ghost Walk takes visitors through Prince Albert at dusk and introduces them to the town’s history, fascinating personalities and ghosts. Dusk is part of the format of this walk; its themes combine local history with the personalities and ghosts of Prince Albert.

ONS has a purpose-built cooking school and offers cooking classes by prior appointment. If you would like to include a class in your travel plans, remember to arrange it in advance.
