Skukuza is the largest rest camp in Kruger National Park and the park’s administrative headquarters. Skukuza Rest Camp is located on the south bank of the Sabie River. This offers two distinct points of reference: Skukuza’s size and administrative role set it apart within the park, while the south bank describes the camp’s location by the river. You can plan your stay around different interests: park history, views of a nearby wetland, or a designated braai and picnic area in the camp.

Park History at the Stevenson-Hamilton Memorial Library

The Stevenson-Hamilton Memorial Library in Skukuza Rest Camp also serves as a museum. It honours James Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden of the park, and his contributions to early conservation efforts in Kruger National Park. The site combines a specific tribute with insights into several areas of the park’s history.

The collections include Stevenson-Hamilton’s diaries, historical documents, and rare photographs. There are also extensive collections on African wildlife, conservation, and the park’s history. Visitors can also see artefacts from the park’s early history, memorabilia, and displays about notable figures such as ranger Harry Wolhuter.

The different types of material offer different perspectives: diaries, documents, and photographs give the historical section a personal and documentary dimension; wildlife and conservation broaden the focus to other aspects of the park. If you would like to choose a particular focus for your visit, you can therefore explore one person and their story, the historical collections, or the broader themes of nature and the park.

Wetland and Wetlands Board Walk

Nearby, the Wetlands Board Walk offers a different focus. It provides views of a restored wetland and the birds and animals that live in this threatened habitat. The trail starts at the Skukuza Indigenous Plant Nursery car park and ends on the nursery grounds. The nursery is 4 km from Skukuza Camp.

Check the current visitor rules with SANParks before your visit.

Day-visitor area at Skukuza Rest Camp

Skukuza Rest Camp also has a designated day-visitor area. Day visitors and visitors from other camps can braai and picnic there. The area adds a practical option to the other attractions: while the Memorial Library focuses on park history and collections, the visitor area is intended for braais and picnics.

If this area is important to your plans, check the current access conditions before travelling.

The location may also influence your plans: the Memorial Library and day-visitor area are in the rest camp, while the Wetlands Board Walk is nearby at the nursery. This lets you decide whether to focus on park history, the wetland, or a designated area for braais and picnics.
