The Limpopo River Valley forms the boundary between Vhembe District and its international neighbours. Vhembe can be explored through its vast wilderness areas and layered cultural history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Vhembe, your interests can help guide you: nature, cultural heritage or both. Themes range from striking landscapes to historic sites and cultural traditions.

Wilderness and striking landscapes

Vhembe encompasses vast wilderness areas along the Limpopo River Valley and is known for its thousands of baobab trees. A large baobab near Sagole Spa is estimated to be over 3,000 years old. The contrast between the expansive landscape and this individual tree, estimated to be exceptionally old, offers two distinct scales: the character of the valley and a specific natural landmark. Vhembe is also considered a gateway to the northern parts of Kruger National Park.

Destinations in Vhembe include Mutale Gorge, Mukumbani Waterfall and Nandoni Dam. The names represent different landscape features—a gorge, a waterfall and a dam—and complement the expansive landscape with individual named destinations.

Cultural heritage and historical themes

The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape documents the rise and fall of the first indigenous kingdom in southern Africa between 900 and 1300 AD. The Mapungubwe Museum houses historical artefacts, images and information about the history of Mapungubwe, including the Golden Rhino. The landscape and the museum offer two perspectives on the same history: the cultural landscape conveys the historical context, while the museum focuses on artefacts, images and information.

Lake Fundudzi is a sacred cultural landscape associated with Venda stories and rituals. In Thathe Vonde Sacred Forest, it is believed that the ancestors are protected by a white lion and the bird Ndadzi. Unlike these places associated with traditions, Schoemandal Museum features an exhibition about the Voortrekker era and the early history of the region. The cultural themes therefore range from Mapungubwe’s kingdom history and Venda stories to an exhibition on early regional history.

Climate and getting there

Thanks to its warm climate, Vhembe is considered a year-round destination. From Johannesburg, travel north on the N1 to Polokwane and continue to Louis Trichardt. Climate and route address different planning questions: the warm climate helps with choosing when to travel, while the road route provides guidance for travelling from Johannesburg.
