Vereeniging offers a clear thematic focus for travellers interested in history and places of remembrance. The main sites are the 1902 peace negotiations, the city’s old cemetery, the Peace Monument and the Civic Centre. These places highlight different aspects: negotiations, remembrance of the Anglo-Boer War and public institutions. When looking for a hotel in Vereeniging, you can first consider which of these themes matters most to you during your stay.

Peace negotiations at Verref

On 15 May 1902, 60 delegates from the Boer republics and 60 delegates from Great Britain met at Vereeniging Brick and Tile, now Verref. The peace negotiations at Vereeniging Brick and Tile took place under a tree stump that is considered a heritage site. A monument at the peace negotiation site at Verref cricket pitch was officially unveiled on 31 May 1992 by former President F. W. de Klerk. The site thus connects the delegates’ meetings with a distinctive setting and a later memorial. The tree stump and monument draw attention to different elements of this peace history.

Cemetery, cenotaph and Peace Monument

The Vereeniging Concentration Camp Cemetery is also Vereeniging’s old cemetery. Women and children who had been held in concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 were buried there. A cenotaph in the cemetery bears the names and ages of the women and children from the Vereeniging Concentration Camp. Its inscription connects the remembrance of a group with the names and ages of individual people. The Peace Monument highlights a different aspect: it was unveiled in Vereeniging in 1961 in honour of the bravery of the Boers during the war. Coert Steynberg designed and created the monument. The cemetery and monument thus refer to different sides of remembrance: the women and children held in the camps are the focus here, while the bravery of the Boers is commemorated there.

Civic Centre and former Top Location

Constitution Square is part of Vereeniging’s Civic Centre. A municipal plan from 2013/14 listed the Sedibeng District Municipality’s main office, City and Banquet Halls, a Civic Theatre and a library there. This description adds an urban perspective on administration and culture to the memorial sites. The Vaal Teknorama Museum is located on the site of the former Top Location. This site, too, is connected with an earlier chapter in the area’s history.

A route as another travel option

The Vaal Marina Route runs from Vereeniging to the Vaal Marina holiday village. Alongside local historical and memorial sites, this adds another planning focus: a route with a named destination. If you would like to include this route in your trip, check the current road conditions before setting out. This lets you consider the sites in Vereeniging and the drive to the holiday village as separate parts of your stay.
