In the Northern Free State, river landscapes, natural areas and places with varied historical connections come together. In the Ngwathe area, the Vaal River forms the northern boundary and also the boundary between the Free State and Gauteng and the North West Province. Parys lies on the Vaal River, close to the N1 national road and the Vaal Toll Plaza; Kroonstad can be reached via the N1 towards Bloemfontein. When choosing where to stay, it is worth first deciding which places and experiences will be the focus of your trip.

The Vaal, Parys and Deneysville

In Parys, its location on the Vaal River combines with geological and cultural significance. The Vredefort Structure in the Vredefort/Parys area is a World Heritage Site and is considered the oldest and largest meteorite impact site. The Parys Museum explores cultural, historical and geological topics. It opened in March 1983 and was declared a National Monument in May 1986.

Golf Island is also one of Parys’s distinctive features: the island is accessible only via a suspension bridge and is home to an 18-hole golf course with views of the Vaal River. Those interested in this place will find river views and golf in a specific local setting—alongside the museum and the Vredefort Structure, these offer different themes for a stay in Parys.

Deneysville on the Vaal Dam is associated with motorboating, pontoon boat trips and fishing charters. At the Peninsula on the Vaal, boating, fishing and jet skiing are available. The history of water sports is also reflected in the Deneysville Aquatic Club: Springbok powerboat racers founded it in 1963 because they wanted access to the Vaal Dam. These local connections offer different points of reference when planning your time on the water.

Nature areas and activities

Koppies Dam Nature Reserve covers 4,300 hectares and offers fishing opportunities. The landscape is characterized by predominantly mixed grassland, dense stands of sweet thorn trees and willows along the Renoster River; the area provides habitat for waterbirds and fish species. The landscape and wildlife are therefore highlights alongside the opportunity to fish.

At Sasolburg Bird Sanctuary, walking trails, small wetlands and shaded areas provide a setting for birdwatching. Moratuwa Nature Reserve near Kroonstad offers a different range of activities, including game drives, wine tasting, hiking, bird and predator watching, and fishing. The differences between the locations are useful for planning: Koppies combines a large natural landscape with fishing, while Moratuwa offers a wider selection of the listed activities.

Museums and memorial sites

In Kroonstad, the SarelCilliers Museum displays portraits and documents relating to the Cilliers family, as well as exhibits on gold mining and the development of railways in the Free State. Mahabane House also offers a historical perspective on Kroonstad: a process to have it declared provincial and national cultural heritage has been initiated, and restoration in accordance with recognized guidelines is planned. This is an initiated recognition process and a planned restoration.

Other sites commemorate different aspects of the past. The Holy Country Heritage Site in Clydesdale remembers the miners who died in the Coalbrook mining disaster. The Vredefortweg Concentration Camp Cemetery is considered a historically significant site in the Koppies district. The R82 Battlefield Route from Kroonstad to Greenlands was officially established and includes the Rooiwal battlefield. Together, these sites point to different chapters of regional history, though they do not all address the same subject.

Near Deneysville, Makgolokwe a Mafehleng preserves the cultural and historical heritage of the Makgolokwe, a Basotho clan with deep roots in the Free State. Nearby, there are also Khoi rock art sites with ancient drawings associated with the Khoi and early Indigenous communities.

Theatre, wine and events

The Etienne Rousseau Theatre in Sasolburg was designed as a multipurpose venue for drama, ballet, opera, music concerts and school performances. Penny Heyns Swimming Pool was the long-time venue for the Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships. The Riemland Wine Route includes several wine cellars where wine tasting and other activities are available.

Kroonpark Holiday Resort in Kroonstad lists fishing and an 18-hole golf course among its facilities. Deneysville is associated with activities at the Vaal Dam, while Sasolburg offers birdwatching and theatre as additional interests. You can first decide which experiences matter most to you, then look for hotels in the Northern Free State.
