Kenton-On-Sea combines experiences at the river estuary with tidal pools, beaches and paths along the water. Two questions are especially useful when planning your visit: Which activities suit your stay, and where does the tide affect access? The Island, Corner Rocks, Blue Pool and Shelly Bay each represent a different side of the town. The R72 and the distances from Gqeberha and East London provide additional guidance for getting there.

River Estuary and Tides

The Island is a sandbank on the Kenton side of the Bushman’s River, near its mouth. Corner Rocks are also on the Kenton side of the river, near its mouth. When the water is low enough, you can reach both places by wading across a channel; access by boat is also possible. Check local tide conditions before setting out, as the wading crossing depends on the water being low enough. Children often play cricket and rounders on The Island and at Corner Rocks.

Beaches and Tidal Walks

Middle Beach and Kariega Main Beach are Kenton-On-Sea’s two Blue Flag beaches. The certification relates to safety, cleanliness and facilities. If the award is important to your plans, check its current status. Blue Pool, a natural tidal pool enclosed by rocks, is at Middle Beach and is suitable for snorkelling and swimming; conditions change with the tide. Kariega Main Beach is suitable for sunset walks, stand-up paddling and surfing.

Shelly Bay can be reached via a coastal path or from Middle Beach, passing the rock formation Carriage Rock. Visiting at low tide is recommended; check local tide conditions before setting out.

Walks and Horse Rides

Kenton-On-Sea can be explored on foot; other destinations are a short drive away. You can reach Dias Cross from the Boesman’s River mouth on a 5 km beach walk, or from Boknes on a 4 km walking trail. The starting points and trail lengths differ, so take both into account when choosing your route.
