Chegutu is on the A5 Highway, which connects Harare and Bulawayo. Compare the location details of a specific hotel with the places you plan to visit.

Local facility

A swimming pool is one of Chegutu’s social and community facilities. If swimming is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible and under what conditions. Treat the local facility and hotel features as separate considerations.

Old Fort Hartley and its history

Old Fort Hartley is in the vicinity of Chegutu. The fort was built in 1896; the structure, built from loose granite stones, is still visible and about 1.5 metres high. On 24 April 1896, twelve gold prospectors entered the fort with extensive supplies and ammunition. From 18 June to 22 July 1896, the fort was subjected to sustained attacks until a relief force led by Capt. the Hon. C. J. White arrived. It was expanded by the BSAP in 1897. The fort played a significant role in the First Chimurenga, also known as the Mashona Rebellion. If you plan to visit the fort, check in advance whether it is currently possible to do so. The gold prospectors’ arrival in April 1896 preceded the attacks that began in June; the relief force marks the end of the period described here.

Mashonaland West: regional context

The wider travel destination of Mashonaland West offers other nature-related and event-focused attractions. Manyame, Mhondoro-Ngezi and Mazvikadei are among its recreational parks. The province also hosts the Nyaminyami Festival, the Lake Kariba Marathon, the Odsey Kadoma Festival and the Korekore Cultural Festival. This gives you two starting points for planning your trip: a regional recreational park, or a festival or marathon as the reason for your visit. The parks’ designation indicates a recreational focus; events make it important to check dates. If a particular event is to determine your trip, check current dates before booking a hotel. The wider travel destination of Mashonaland West also includes Mana Pools National Park, a 219,600-hectare wildlife sanctuary and national park in Hurungwe District. Its area and location in Hurungwe District give this regional entry a different classification from the three recreational parks mentioned above.
