Mont Fleuri: Monuments and Garden Experience
Accommodation in Mont Fleuri
Monuments and Garden Experience
Le Palmes Theatre is one of the Seychelles’ national monuments and is located in Mont Fleuri. The Botanical Garden is also listed as a national monument of the Seychelles. Visitors can also feed giant tortoises at the National Botanical Garden. Together, the cultural and historical context and the hands-on garden activity offer two different perspectives on Mont Fleuri. Victoria Hospital is also located in Mont Fleuri and helps visitors get their bearings.
The Seychelles in a Wider Context
Across the wider Seychelles destination, there are additional themes relating to landscapes, nature and history. The Seychelles marine parks can be reached by boat; Port-Launay is also accessible on foot. Ste. Anne Marine Park comprises six islands. Moyenne Island, in Ste. Anne Marine National Park, is home to the remains of early settlers’ houses, pirates’ graves and a small thatched chapel.
On Curieuse, a walkway built on stilts crosses the swamp and provides access to the mangrove habitat even at high tide. The mangrove swamp borders Baie Laraie. The island was used for almost a hundred years as a quarantine site for people with leprosy—here, nature and history are equally part of the landscape.
On La Digue, Veuve Special Reserve covers 21 hectares and forms part of a 200-hectare plateau on the western side of the island. Reserve staff answer questions and help visitors find the birds. These area figures provide a more precise sense of the reserve and its surrounding landscape.
On Praslin, Praslin National Park has several short paths; Glacis Noire is the only official trail. Vallée de Mai covers 19.5 hectares and is one of the smallest natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. For travelers interested in nature, Praslin offers both walking options and a distinctive World Heritage site.
Aldabra is the largest island in the Seychelles and was inscribed as a UNESCO Marine World Heritage Site in 1982. The atoll measures 35 by 15 kilometers, and its land area is about 155 square kilometers. The protected area covers a total of 2,559 square kilometers, including the lagoon and both land and marine protected areas. The protected area therefore extends well beyond the island’s land area alone.
The Anse Major Trail is another useful landmark for nature enthusiasts: in Morne Seychellois National Park, it begins in Danzil Bel-Ombre and ends at Anse Major Beach. When planning a trip, it is worth distinguishing these wider Seychelles themes from Mont Fleuri itself: here, the focus is on monuments and the garden experience.
