In Machabee, you can explore the collections at the Seyramics studio and gallery and meet the artist. The studio opened in 2019; ceramic artist Zara Albert owns it. Seyramics therefore offers a tangible cultural point of interest when deciding where to travel, if locally made ceramics are among your interests. The visit can be viewed from two perspectives: through the collections and through the making process, which is the focus of a pre-booked tour.

Seyramics and Ceramics in Machabee

The Seyramics collections include porcelain jewellery, ceramic sculptures and home accessories inspired by the ocean, coral reefs, tropical flora and iconic forms of the Seychelles. As you look around, you can distinguish two aspects: the form of the object and the inspiration drawn from nature and the Seychelles. The range may change; the connection to locally made ceramics remains the lasting context of the visit.

Studio Tour and Ceramic Pieces

Seyramics offers a free, 30-minute tour of the studio by appointment. You can meet Zara Albert and learn more about how locally made ceramics are produced. The tour focuses on the making process, while exploring the collections in the studio and gallery puts the emphasis on the finished works. Check the current arrangements before travelling, as visits are by appointment. Ceramic pieces are available after booking a studio visit directly. If you have a particular item in mind, check current availability in advance.

Glacis: History and Landscape

The district of Glacis, the wider destination, lies on the north-west side of Mahé, about 20 km from Victoria. Two visible ruins of a Second World War lookout post stand on the slope of Glacis. The slope was chosen as a strategic location for observing enemy ships. During the war, soldiers walking back and forth while building the post sang the song “When she comes”; the mountain was named after the song.

In the wider destination of Glacis, the “When She Comes” trail offers a historical insight into the Seychelles’ involvement in the Second World War. The trail is a moderate, shaded walk that takes about one and a half hours to reach the summit. Along the way, it passes through lush vegetation and by endemic species. From the summit, the 360-degree view extends from Beau Vallon Bay to the west coast of Pointe Larue. Check current trail access before making plans.

For planning purposes, distinguish between the two durations: the tour takes 30 minutes, while the moderate trail takes about one and a half hours to reach the summit. The focus also differs: ceramic making and collections in Machabee, compared with views, vegetation and history in Glacis.
