Bignona combines a distinctive topography with a cultural identity of its own. The wider destination of Ziguinchor offers additional regional attractions. When planning your trip and choosing a hotel, it is helpful to distinguish between the city’s attractions and those of the broader destination.

Cityscape between the Marigot and the Bolongs

Bignona lies in a landscape resembling a half-basin. A marigot borders the city to the north and east; bolongs limit its expansion in those same directions. The terrain and waterways give the cityscape a clear geographical outline.

Education, culture and religious events

CEDAC is part of Bignona’s educational and cultural profile. It offers educational activities, training workshops, reading clubs and cultural initiatives. The annual Grand Gamou in honour of Imam Ousmane Fansou Bodian is another religious event. At one edition, thousands of pilgrims from Senegal and the subregion came to Bignona. The event therefore attracts participants from beyond the city.

Bignona Market

Bignona Market is considered an African market. Its daily rhythm runs from morning to evening; check the current market hours before visiting.

Ziguinchor in the regional context

In the wider destination of Ziguinchor, a circular house form with a central impluvium developed in the Kingdom of Bandial, in the region and department of Ziguinchor. It is considered a wholly distinctive architectural form in Africa. In traditional impluvium houses, the rooms were arranged in a ring around a small central courtyard beneath a double-pitched roof. The funnel-shaped inner roof let in light and collected rainwater. An earthen basin caught the water; a buried palm-trunk drain channelled it outside. In this way, the floor plan and roof function are connected: the ring of rooms surrounds the courtyard, while the roof directs light and water towards this central point.

The city of Ziguinchor itself has numerous historic buildings from the French and Portuguese periods. The Cathédrale Saint-Antoine de Padoue in Ziguinchor is listed among the region’s historic monuments. In Ziguinchor, you can watch the fishermen arrive; local fruit juices on the river pontoons are also a regular part of the experience there.

In the same wider destination, the King of Oussouye welcomes visitors to the Bois sacré. He always wears red and carries a straw broom as a symbol of his power. Within the wider destination of Ziguinchor, the Parc national de la Basse Casamance is associated with Oussouye.
