Saint-Louis offers plenty to explore during a stay focused on urban history, architecture and culture. As you plan your trip, you can distinguish between ĂŽle de Saint-Louis and attractions in the wider Saint-Louis destination: the island defines the historic urban context, while some landscapes, festivals and activities are explicitly part of the wider destination. This makes it easy to tailor your hotel stay to your travel interests.

ĂŽle de Saint-Louis and its cityscape

ĂŽle de Saint-Louis lies between the two branches of the Senegal River estuary. It is divided into the northern district, the southern district and Place Faidherbe, with the Palais de la Gouvernance at its center. This layout connects the districts and central square in a clearly defined urban structure.

Balcony houses, Signares’ gallery houses and rare, low Portuguese houses shape the architecture of the old town. The different types of houses offer a tangible view of the architectural styles that define the island’s historic character. Saint-Louis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The designated area on the island includes its riverbanks and quays, as well as the Faidherbe Bridge.

City plan, history and Faidherbe Bridge

The Hôtel du Gouvernement was built on the site of the city’s former fort and forms the orthogonal center of Île de Saint-Louis’s regularly laid-out city plan. The island’s history extends beyond its architecture: it was the former capital of West Africa and illustrates the development of colonial administration in the region.

The Faidherbe Bridge is the only crossing to the historic island. Its spans were brought from France in separate parts in 1897. In the wider Saint-Louis destination, the bridge has seven arch spans. The second span from the island is designed to rotate around a fixed axis so that ships can pass through. Check the current crossing conditions separately if they are important to your plans.

Exhibitions and cultural events

The exhibition at the Musée Jean Mermoz de l’Aéropostal includes images, paintings, aircraft models such as the Breguet 14, large silhouettes, posters and archival documents. The exhibition thus ranges from visual depictions to models and historical records. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

The Festival International de Jazz de Saint Louis takes place annually in Saint-Louis. The Saint-Louis Jazz festival began in 1993 in the historic city of Saint-Louis and brings together musicians from around the world every year. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for the edition you wish to attend before booking.

Fanal is also part of the annual cultural calendar of the Saint-Louis region. The Maggal des deux rakaas commemorates Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké’s prayer at the governor’s palace in 1895. In the wider Saint-Louis destination, it brings thousands of Mouride faithful to Saint-Louis each year on September 5. Check the date if this event is a key factor in your travel plans.

In the wider Saint-Louis destination

South of Saint-Louis lies the Langue de Barbarie, with its dunes, islets and fishing villages, where the river meets the ocean. The Guet N’Dar district on the Langue de Barbarie hosts major regattas every year. This landscape and the regattas are part of the wider destination and should be distinguished from the historic island described above.

The Bou el Mogdad cruise travels from Saint-Louis to Podor. Historic former trading posts can be seen at stops along the way. As route details may change, check the current itinerary and available travel dates before making plans.

The regional nature attractions also include Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary in the Saint-Louis region. Nature conservation and ecotourism are among the area’s most important human activities. Check access arrangements separately if you would like to include this in your trip.
