Chirundu connects a historic bridge near the town with a paleontological site in the surrounding area. As a border town, Chirundu is also a gateway to the Lower Zambezi.

Attractions in and near Chirundu

Beit Bridge near Chirundu was built in 1939 as a modern suspension bridge with parallel cables. It is considered the first modern suspension bridge of its kind outside the United States. Its construction date and design give the bridge a clearly defined engineering history and a distinctive place in local orientation. Those interested in the history of technology can include this historic landmark in their exploration of Chirundu.

Chirundu Fossil Forest is a paleontological site in the Mid-Zambezi Basin in southern Zambia. Fossilized tree trunks and silicified wood have been preserved there. The hills at Fossil Forest are also covered with column-like, rock-like formations. The surrounding area thus features both preserved evidence of the Earth's history and striking landforms. The site complements the bridge's historical significance with a distinct geological aspect.

Rivers and culture in the wider district

Across the wider Chirundu District, the landscapes along the Zambezi and Kafue rivers are described as scenic and as having ecotourism potential. These river landscapes provide a broader geographical setting than the attractions near the town and give the region its own connection to nature.

The cultural connection also extends across the wider district: Budima dancers are based in Chiefdom Chipepo. The tradition is therefore part of the cultural setting of Chirundu District, while its specific location is in Chiefdom Chipepo.

Southern Province as a wider setting

Beyond the district, Zambia's Southern Province is a distinct geographical setting. Its network of rivers and lakes includes the Zambezi, the Kafue and Lake Kariba. Lochinvar and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Parks are located in the province; Kafue National Park extends partly into Southern Province. This distinction helps separate Chirundu's attractions from natural areas located at the provincial level.

Lochinvar National Park offers opportunities for birdwatching; more than 420 species have been recorded there. Its landscape includes floodplains, woodlands and termite mounds. Gwisho Hot Springs lie along a geological fault. Sebanzi Hill is also part of this park: the archaeological site was home to an Iron Age village that remained inhabited until the last century.

Kafue National Park extends partly into Southern Province. Most riverside camps and lodges in the park offer boat trips year-round, while water levels vary considerably throughout the year. Canoe trips are offered particularly at Kaingu. Specific offerings may depend on the operator.

Livingstone is also in Southern Province and is described as Zambia's tourism capital. The transboundary World Heritage site Mosi-oa-Tunya / Victoria Falls, shared with Zimbabwe, is located there. The World Heritage site covers 3,779 hectares of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian side. These geographical and provincial connections offer a broader perspective on the cultural and scenic diversity of Southern Province, without replacing Chirundu's local attractions.
