From Chishimba Falls on the Luombe River to the Mambwe people’s traditional Mutomolo ceremony, Zambia’s Northern Province offers different perspectives on landscape and culture. Other waterfalls and attractions provide specific geographical reference points for the region. When planning your trip, you can consider natural sites, locations and cultural themes as distinct areas of interest, and shape your choices around what interests you most.

Waterfalls and their locations

Chishimba Waterfalls National Monument is on the Luombe River, 35 kilometres from Kasama, on the road between Kasama and Mporokoso. There are various paths and viewpoints around Chishimba Falls. In addition to the waterfall, the river, the road and the paths with their viewpoints can all help you find your bearings. If you plan to use the paths during your visit, it is advisable to check their current conditions beforehand.

The locations of the other waterfalls also differ. Kalambo Falls is in Mbala District in Zambia’s Northern Province; Kundabwika Falls is in Kaputa District. Kabwelume Falls is in Mporokoso District. The provincial administration gives its location as 84 km along the Kawambwa Road. Lumangwe Falls is on the western plains of Lusenga Plains National Park.

Chishimba offers a combination of geographical reference points for orientation: a river, a distance, a road connection, paths and viewpoints. For the other waterfalls, district or landscape descriptions are more prominent; Kabwelume also has a road reference. This can help you classify the sites by the types of geographical reference points they offer.

Cultural traditions and attractions

Mutomolo is a traditional ceremony of the Mambwe people in Zambia’s Northern Province. Chishimba Falls has a different cultural significance: the Bemba regard it as one of their most sacred spiritual sites. These add two distinct perspectives—a Mambwe ceremony and the significance of the falls from the Bemba perspective. Alongside the natural attractions, these cultural connections offer another way to experience the region.

Kasaba Bay and Mpulungu Harbour are also among Northern Province’s tourist attractions. They add further specific places to the selection of waterfalls and cultural themes.
