Cross River: Waterfalls, Monoliths and Swallows
Accommodation in Cross River
Refome Lake is an oxbow lake in the community of Ebom in Cross River State; access infrastructure is limited. The region’s natural attractions also include a seasonal bird phenomenon and waterfalls with tiered cascades. Stone monoliths and festivals also offer a reason to explore the destination’s cultural side.
Landscapes and Seasonal Wildlife Viewing
Millions of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) migrate to roost at the Swallow Roost Site in Ebakken-Boje during every dry season. If you take this bird spectacle into account when planning your trip, the dry season is the key seasonal reference point. Formal development of the site as a bird tourism destination has been proposed, but has not been established.
Agbokim Waterfalls consist of seven tiers of cascades. In contrast to this permanent landscape feature, the gathering of barn swallows is explicitly seasonal. The natural attractions therefore differ in their timing: the birds roost during the dry season, while the lake and the seven tiers of cascades remain as landscape features. Obudu Mountain Resort is located in the Sankwala Mountains in Cross River State. If you include it in your accommodation plans, check the current condition of the facilities before your trip.
Stone Monoliths, Cultural Sites and Festivals
The Alok-Ikom stone monoliths are decorated with geometric patterns and stylized human features. They stand upright and face one another in communities across the state, arranged in circles that are sometimes nearly perfect. The monoliths also bear a form of writing and a complex system of coded information. UNESCO lists the site on Nigeria’s Tentative List for World Heritage, not on the World Heritage List.
Cultural sites in Cross River include the Old Residency Slave Trade Museum and Nigeria’s first botanical garden. If you plan to visit these sites, check current visitor access in advance. The Leboku International New Yam Festival in Ugep, Yakurr, features music and dance in 2026. Carnival Calabar combines music and celebrations and includes various bands and cultural groups. An edition of Carnival Calabar is scheduled for 2026. Check the current event schedule before planning your trip around the carnival.
Nigeria in a Broader Context
Beyond Cross River, Nigeria is a diverse destination. The country’s climatic differences create a north-south gradient of different habitats and ecosystems. One distinct cultural landmark in Nigeria is Sukur, an ancient settlement. Sukur’s history of iron smelting, thriving trade and strong political institutions dates back to the 16th century.
Sukur’s landscape includes terraced fields, dry-stone buildings and paved stone paths. The Hidi is the community’s political and spiritual leader; his palace is made of dry stone, and numerous shrines, including some made of ceramic, are grouped around it. Many disused iron-smelting shaft furnaces remain. They were operated with bellows and were usually located near their owners’ homes. Sukur’s traditional terraced farming and associated ritual systems continue to this day. Regularly observed festivals and ceremonies are regarded there as signs of cultural continuity.
