Maltahöhe can be understood through three distinct themes: historical traces in the town, its location on the edge of the Swartrand Escarpment, and a natural phenomenon in the surrounding area. When looking for a hotel in Maltahöhe, this distinction can help you decide whether your trip will be shaped more by local history, landscapes, or activities in the wider travel destination of Hardap. These themes relate to different areas: Maltahöhe itself, Sandhof to the north, and the distinct regional context of Hardap.

Historical traces in the town

Maltahöhe Cemetery contains graves of members of the Schutztruppe dating back around a hundred years. The graves are connected with the fighting against Hendrik Witbooi in 1894 and the Nama uprising of 1903 to 1907. The Maltahöhe Hotel was built in 1907. Alongside the cemetery, it is another historical landmark in the town. The cemetery points to conflict and uprising, while the hotel adds its own architectural history.

Landscapes and nature in the surrounding area

Maltahöhe lies on the edge of the Swartrand Escarpment. This geographical landmark helps locate the town, while the historical connections of the cemetery reveal its local history. Sandhof farm lies about 40 kilometres north of Maltahöhe. On an approximately 800-hectare pan-like area, a plant species blooms only after particular climatic conditions. The phenomenon depends on rainfall, and its timing and occurrence vary. Sandhof is therefore a distinct point of interest in the surrounding area, while the bloom itself remains a variable natural event. This distinction matters when planning a trip: the approximate location and area describe the site; a bloom cannot be planned as a fixed-date event.

Hardap as a regional context

In the wider travel destination of Hardap, the Hardap Game Reserve lies at the Hardap Dam on the Fish River. The dam covers 25 km². The reserve includes open savannah and mountainous areas such as the Gemsbok Plateau. This landscape offers a different perspective from Maltahöhe’s location on the edge of the Swartrand Escarpment: in the Hardap Game Reserve, savannah and mountainous areas are the focus as parts of a protected area.

A total of 284 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, including Bradfield’s Swift and Stark’s Lark. Wildlife includes Black Rhino, Kudu, Oryx, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Springbok, and Red Hartebeest. The species list gives an impression of the diversity of the protected area; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Activities in the reserve include freshwater fishing, water sports, boat trips, game drives, and birdwatching. The hiking trails are listed as 9 km and 15 km; the longer route is six kilometres longer. This makes it possible to compare the two trails by distance.

Annual fishing competitions are held in Hardap for those interested. If you would like to include a competition in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. It is also advisable to confirm local conditions for the activities mentioned in the reserve.
