Discover Erongo: seals, rock formations and culture
Accommodation in Erongo
Erongo brings together a variety of natural and cultural highlights at specific locations. When looking for a hotel in Erongo, it helps to first decide on the focus of your trip: seals and sea tours, bird sanctuaries, hiking trails, striking rock formations or a cultural visit each offer a different experience.
Conservation areas and landscapes in Erongo
Henties Bay and Swakopmund, as well as the hamlet of Wlotzkasbaken, lie within Dorob National Park. The dune belt between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is also in this national park. Part of Namib-Naukluft Park lies in the south of the Erongo Region; the rest extends into the Hardap and Karas regions. These boundaries help locate the named protected areas geographically, without equating Erongo with the entire Namib-Naukluft Park.
In the northwest of the region, Brandberg, the distinctively shaped Spitzkoppe Mountains and the very old Messum Crater are among the natural landmarks. Spitzkoppe is often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia.” It is estimated to be almost 700 million years old; its highest point is 1,784 metres above sea level and around 700 metres above the surrounding plain. Erongo’s landscape combines striking formations with specific height and age figures.
Seals, bird sanctuaries and sea tours
Cape Cross Seal Reserve protects the world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals. During the breeding season in November and December, up to 210,000 animals gather there. This seasonal peak is an estimate and may vary from year to year. A boardwalk makes it easier to observe the seals; check its current condition before your trip.
The history of Cape Cross also defines this location: Portuguese navigator Diego CĂŁo landed there in 1486 and erected a stone padrĂŁo. A replica is visible today; the area designated as a National Heritage Site includes a second replica. If you plan to see the visible replica in particular, check its current condition before your visit.
Walvis Bay Lagoon and Sandwich Harbour are Ramsar bird sanctuaries. Sandwich Harbour is about 30 kilometres south of Walvis Bay. A tourism description from 2015 mentions boat tours at sea departing from Walvis Bay, where Benguela dolphins, seals, pelicans and ocean sunfish can be seen, as well as southern right whales on occasion. Check which operators are currently running tours before making plans. The highlights described therefore differ: Cape Cross is known for its seal colony, while tours from Walvis Bay feature a variety of marine and coastal wildlife.
Hiking trails and cultural visits
Fishing, camping and hiking are listed as tourist activities in Dorob National Park. Check current access and campsite operations before setting out. The park also includes the 18-kilometre Jakkalsputz hiking trail. Hiking trails along the Omaruru River are listed as 20 and 70 kilometres long. These distances offer a concrete comparison of trail lengths; check current access and the condition of your chosen route before a hike.
The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San at Omandumba has been open to visitors since 2008. Visits include demonstrations of traditional dances and rituals, as well as games. The cultural programme offers a different focus from seal watching, sea tours or hiking, and may influence your choice between destinations in Erongo.
