When looking for a hotel in Sidi Slimane, you can also consider the surrounding area when choosing your destination. Rirha is a specific historical point of reference: the archaeological site brings together evidence from the Mauretanian and Roman periods and is likely to be identified with ancient Gilda.

Rirha in the surrounding area

Rirha lies in a bend of the Oued Beht, eight kilometres north of Sidi Slimane. The site covers approximately ten hectares. The archaeological site is classified as national cultural heritage. Its location, approximate size and status offer different points of reference for understanding the site.

Residential Quarter and Mauretanian Layers

A Mauretanian residential quarter was built entirely from unfired mud bricks and dated to the period from the 5th century BC to the beginning of the 1st century AD. The Mauretanian layers attest to intensive domestic and craft activities, as well as exchanges across the Mediterranean, from the 5th century BC into the 1st century AD. The narrower dating applies to the residential quarter, while the broader time span applies to the Mauretanian layers as a whole. This makes it possible to consider separately the construction of a specific quarter and the broader chronological framework of the layers. The evidence also extends beyond residential life: craft and exchange add further aspects of life at the time to domestic activities.

Roman Remains and Ancient Accounts

Roman remains include a section of a paved road, a 2nd-century fortification wall, two houses with peristyles and Latin inscriptions. A peristyle is a courtyard surrounded by columns; the two houses thus illustrate a specific form of ancient residential architecture. The wall’s dating to the 2nd century comes after the Mauretanian residential quarter, which dates to the period ending at the beginning of the 1st century AD. This makes it possible to distinguish these periods in Rirha’s history.

Rirha is likely to be identified with ancient Gilda, which Ptolemy and other ancient authors mentioned. This possible identification complements the architectural and written evidence with a link to ancient accounts; it remains explicitly a probability.

The Wider Provincial Setting

In the wider region, Sidi Slimane Province lies at the heart of the fertile Gharb Plain. The Oued Beht crosses the province, which is surrounded by extensive grain fields and orchards. Agriculture and fertile soils strongly shape the province; it has long played an important role in Morocco’s agricultural production.

Two different perspectives therefore come together in understanding the destination: Rirha offers an archaeological point of reference in the surrounding area, while the province provides the agricultural setting of the Gharb Plain.
