Bel Ombre can be explored through specific nature and cultural themes. In Frederica, rare endemic plant and animal species can be found alongside traces of a historic sugar-cane economy. There are also trails and picnic options with different timeframes, as well as a museum with a large shell collection. When planning your trip, you can consider which experiences you would like to prioritise during your stay.

Nature and Trails in Frederica

Frederica is characterised by rich biodiversity, including rare endemic plant and animal species. The Frédérica Nature Reserve is named after the historic Frederica sugar estate, founded in the 19th century. The estate’s chimney still shapes the landscape and provides a visible connection to this history.

The two-hour Discovery Trail in the Heritage Nature Reserve offers two routes to choose from: through the Dalsing Plains or along Sentier Goyaves, which leads to Hirondelles Waterfall. Sentier Goyaves has steeper slopes and is best suited to adventurous, experienced riders. Further into the reserve, you will find dense vegetation and endemic birds such as the Pink Pigeon, Mauritius Black Bulbul and Mauritius Kestrel. The two routes therefore follow different paths; Sentier Goyaves is also noted for its steeper slopes and the waterfall as its destination.

Picnic Options and Their Timeframes

The Picnic Pod is a picnic spot accessible on foot, offering snacks, drinks and games. Visits are available only as part of the Bel Ombre Wilderness Tour package, which includes a one-hour guided walk, or by special request for groups and team-building activities. If you would like to include this option in your plans, check availability in advance and take the relevant access route into account.

Another option is the three-hour picnic lunch in Frederica. It takes place by the water, in surroundings with plants, birds, the Jacotet River and L’Exemple Waterfall. It is subject to the provider’s availability; contact them in advance to plan your visit.

The timings can be compared when planning your day: the Discovery Trail takes two hours, the Picnic Pod package includes a one-hour guided walk, and the lunch in Frederica is planned for three hours. These are separate activities, and you can take each one’s timeframe into account individually.

Culture in Bel Ombre and the Wider Savanne Destination

World of Seashells is a museum at Place du Moulin in Bel Ombre. Its collection comprises nearly 8,000 shells from 1,500 species found around the world. The collection figures may change over time. Alongside nature and trail experiences, the museum offers a distinct focus on shells and their diversity.

In the wider Savanne destination, a 33-metre-high statue of Shiva stands at the entrance to the Ganga Talao crater lake. You can walk along the shore; people from Mauritius and abroad also make pilgrimages on foot to Ganga Talao. Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) is one of the main attractions in the Savanne District. Other attractions include La Vanille Crocodile Park, Kanaka Crater and Bassin Blanc.

At Domaine de Bois Chéri, visitors can learn about the history of tea and the production stages, from picking to processing in the factory. The estate has a dedicated museum. Check the current operating conditions before visiting. These Savanne themes complement the picture of Bel Ombre without conflating Frederica’s nature and cultural features with the offerings of the wider destination.

Plan the activities listed according to their respective timings and access conditions; for options that require an enquiry or are subject to availability, it is advisable to confirm details in advance.
