Grand River South East combines river trips and water activities with a local history dating back to the Dutch trading era. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether a boat trip, other water activities or the history of the area will be your main focus.

River Trips and Activities

The area offers daily excursions, diving, parasailing and island hopping. A typical excursion might begin with a boat trip upriver to GRSE Waterfall, followed by parasailing, diving or snorkeling. Kayaking on the Grand River South East offers a close-up view of the waterfalls. The options have different focuses: a tour might combine a river trip with other activities, while kayaking focuses on seeing the waterfalls up close. Check dates and availability if you are planning a specific excursion.

Square Alain Noël

A 2017 article described Square Alain Noël in Grande Rivière Sud Est as a village landing with a large garden and a kiosk. According to the report, many Mauritians and tourists took boats from there to GRSE Waterfall or Île aux Cerfs. If you are planning a boat trip, check current services in advance.

History of Grand River South East

In the 16th century, the Dutch called Grand River South East “Groot River” during their ebony trade. Another historical event took place nearby: Captain John Bowen’s pirate ship Speaker was wrecked on a reef off the east coast of Mauritius on January 7, 1702, opposite Grande Rivière Sud-Est and near Île des Roches. The name’s history relates to Grand River South East itself; the wreck of the Speaker is part of the nearby historical context. The trade-related origin of the place name and the later shipwreck can therefore be understood as distinct historical references.
