On Lake Malawi, Chikale and Kande are among the beach areas in Nkhata Bay District; Fort Matete Site is a cultural destination there. To plan your trip, you can first decide which themes will shape your stay, then look for a hotel.

Beach areas on Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is a clear focal point. The district’s beach areas along the lake include Chikale, Chintheche, Kande, Mwaya and Liuzi. These five place names offer concrete starting points if the beach and lake are important to your trip. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether the lake is your main interest or whether historical sites and natural areas should also be a priority. This way, you can tailor your search to the focus of your trip rather than considering your accommodation separately from the rest of your stay.

Cultural sites in the district

The cultural scene also has specific sites. Fort Matete Site is a cultural destination in Nkhata Bay. Near Kakumbi in the district is a historic site known as a martyr’s grave. Old Bandawe Mission is also among the historic sites and is associated with the locations of Makuzi and Thipula in the district. If culture is an important part of your trip, you can base your choices around these named sites and add a distinct focus alongside the lakeside scenery.

Nature and diving

The nature theme brings together a variety of landscapes. Kandoli Forest Reserve is among the district’s areas of tourist interest; the rubber and timber plantations near Vizara are scenic areas. So nature is not limited to the beach areas: the forest reserve and plantations offer other specific landscapes to explore. Diving is another topic to consider when planning your trip. One established diving school is located on Lake Malawi in Nkhata Bay, and another is on Likoma Island. If diving is a deciding factor in your plans, check the current options in advance.
