Ntcheu: History and Culture
Accommodation in Ntcheu
The memorial to Chief Gomani Chikuse I is a historic landmark near Ntcheu Boma. Cultural references to the Ngoni, as well as markets and events, also relate to the wider Ntcheu area. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the memorial, a festival in the district, and destinations in Lizulu. This will help you connect the purpose of your stay with the specific location.
Memorial and the History of Chief Gomani Chikuse I
The Ngoni of Ntcheu erected the memorial to Chief Gomani Chikuse I in 1927 at his burial site between Dombole and Chiole. It is located one kilometre northeast of Ntcheu Boma. The memorial was intended to express a growing awareness of colonial oppression. Chief Gomani Chikuse I was shot dead by colonial officer Captain Ashton on 27 October 1896 over differences in administrative matters. By the time the British arrived in Ntcheu, he was already ruling his people. The one-kilometre distance refers to Ntcheu Boma, not the walking or driving time. If you plan to visit the memorial, check access in advance.
Ngoni Culture and Festivals
Umhlangano takes place annually in September in Ntcheu District in southern Malawi. Umlangangano wa Maseko is one of the cultural festivals of the Ngoni of Ntcheu, where visitors can experience Malawi's culture.
Lizulu: Seat of Leadership, Market, and Orientation
The headquarters of the Maseko Ngoni leadership is in Lizulu. A market day draws traders from faraway places. If you plan to visit the market, ask in advance which day is market day. For orientation, Nkosini in Lizulu is about 300 metres from the M1 and at least 58 kilometres from Ntcheu Boma. These are distance figures, not driving times. When comparing accommodation, check the exact address against the destination you actually plan to visit.
A Historic Occasion for a Hike
At a commemorative event for International Mountain Day on 8 December 2023, Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V led a hike up Muonekela Hill in Ntcheu. These dates are not interchangeable for trip planning: Umhlangano takes place annually in September; the hike up Muonekela Hill was part of the commemorative event on 8 December 2023. Check the relevant festival date before your trip.
Find a Hotel That Suits Your Destination
If you are travelling for the memorial, use Ntcheu Boma and the memorial's location as your reference points; for Umhlangano, the specific event venue in the district matters. In Lizulu, the actual address of your destination is what matters. This keeps your choice aligned with the purpose of your trip, and means the place name alone is not a substitute for checking the location.
