Lokichogio lies in a broad valley between the Songot Mountains to the south and the Mogilia Range to the north. The town is located near the border with South Sudan. The Loitikipi Plains add a largely flat landscape to the surrounding valley and mountain terrain.

Lokichogio between valley and mountains

The Mogilia Range rises just behind Lokichogio and offers numerous hiking opportunities as well as beautiful views. This brings two distinct perspectives together: the valley town provides a point of orientation, while the range is the reference point for hikes and vistas. Those interested in mountain landscapes can include this nearby area separately in their travel plans rather than treating it as part of the town centre.

Lokichogio can be reached from Nairobi by private charter flight. Arrange the connection with a provider before travelling.

Hiking and scenery nearby

The Loitikipi Plains lie about 20 km from Lokichogio. They are largely flat, with occasional termite mounds and the silhouettes of cattle and their herders adding distinctive features. The most striking plant on the plains is a succulent euphorbia. Unlike the Mogilia Range, the focus here is not a ridge rising directly behind the town, but the flat landscape and its occasional striking forms.

Wildlife is also part of this landscape: the lush grasslands of the Loitikipi Plains attract numerous wild animals. They migrate seasonally between the plains, South Sudan, Ethiopia and northern Uganda. These seasonal movements therefore extend beyond Lokichogio’s immediate surroundings, linking the plains with a cross-border region.

A dam on the outskirts of Lokichogio attracts numerous herders with their thirsty animals. This spot on the edge of town adds a concrete observation from the surrounding area to the picture of mountains and plains.

Route planning and choosing a hotel

Day 3 of the Northern Circuit route covers the journey from Lokichogio to the Loitikipi Plains and back: a total of 90 km over gravel and black, clay-rich soil. The roughly 20 km describes the plains’ distance from the town; the 90 km, by contrast, refers to the entire round trip described. This distinguishes the distance to the landscape area from the length of the specific route.

When looking for a hotel for your trip to Lokichogio, you can first decide what matters most to you: hiking opportunities and views at the Mogilia Range, or the plains with their euphorbia, grasslands and seasonal wildlife migrations. This comparison can help you decide whether the destination suits your plans. When reviewing a specific hotel offer, check the listed features and current availability.
