Naivasha combines urban attractions with the landscape around Lake Naivasha. Hell’s Gate National Park and the lake are among the most important cultural and heritage sites in the official Naivasha plan. On the lakeshore, Elsamere Lodge recalls the time when it was home to Joy and George Adamson.

Town Market and Municipal Park

Naivasha’s modern town market opened on 14 June 2023. The county report describes three floors across four building blocks, with 6,773 square metres of usable space. The facility was designed to accommodate more than 600 traders. The features described include 89 lockable shops, 33 of them with roller shutters, as well as a cold room and camera surveillance.

Municipal Park is located in the central business district. It opened on 11 March 2024. The 2025 municipal development plan lists landscaped gardens, seating, solar lights, a public toilet and paths for non-motorised transport. If you are staying in town, you can take the market and park into account when choosing accommodation and compare their exact locations.

Hell’s Gate and the Lake Surroundings

Hell’s Gate is outside the town centre, in the wider area around Lake Naivasha. The Kenya Wildlife Service gives its area as around 68 square kilometres and says it was designated a national park in 1984. Described landscape features include high cliffs, water-carved gorges, Fischer’s Tower, obsidian caves and geothermal areas. The KWS lists hiking, cycling and climbing as activities. Before visiting, check which areas are currently accessible and the conditions for your planned activity.

Naivasha Country Club and Crescent Island are listed as cultural and heritage sites in the area around Lake Naivasha. Crescent Island is near Karagita. Crater Lake Game Sanctuary is also included in this directory, with its location given as Lake Naivasha. These destinations are part of the wider lake area.

Elsamere and the Adamsons

Elsamere is on the shore of Lake Naivasha. The Elsa Conservation Trust preserves personal belongings of Joy and George Adamson there, including Joy’s sketchbooks. The couple’s legacy is associated with conservation and the story of “Born Free.” On its visitor page, the Trust lists boat trips on the lake and excursions to Hell’s Gate, Mount Longonot, Olkaria and Crescent Island. Ask in advance about current options and how to arrange your preferred excursion.
