Meru National Park is associated with the conservation history of George and Joy Adamson and the lioness Elsa. George and Joy rescued Elsa, raised her, and successfully returned her to the wild. For travelers interested in species conservation, this is a tangible story: it encompasses both rescuing and raising an animal and its return to the wild.

Meru County: Nature and Culture

Several national parks and protected areas in Meru County attract tourists. Protected areas and forests where the region’s wildlife species are predominantly found include Meru National Park, Mount Kenya National Park, and Imenti Forest. This brings a specific park story together with a broader look at regional protected areas.

The culture and heritage of the Meru community are also among the tourist attractions in Meru County. This includes the preservation of traditional sacred sites by the elders of the Nchuri Ncheke. Alongside nature and conservation topics, this adds a cultural perspective focused on ancestral places and their care.

The Murera Gate Cultural Festival puts Meru culture, traditions, music, and food in the spotlight. It takes place at Murera Gate in Meru National Park. Alongside the community’s heritage, music and food are also featured as distinct cultural themes.

The privately managed Lewa Downs Ranch attracts tourists in Meru County. The ranch is associated with off-road races, the Rhino Charge, and marathons. Cycling and an 8 km hike were part of an event in the Magical Kenya Trail Series at Chogoria Gate in Mount Kenya National Park. Regional sporting connections thus include both running and marathon events and an event that combined cycling and hiking.

Kenya as a Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Meru, the wider destination of Kenya offers further distinct cultural and nature-related themes. The Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests comprise ten separate forest areas stretching for around 200 kilometers along the coast. They contain the remains of fortified Mijikenda villages, known as Kayas. The Kayas were established from the 16th century onward and were abandoned by the 1940s. Considered sacred places and the dwelling places of ancestors, they are cared for by councils of elders.

Another nature-related destination is the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley. It is the most important feeding site in the world for lesser flamingos; around 1.5 million birds move between the lakes. For great white pelicans, the lake system provides the most important nesting and breeding areas in the Great Rift Valley.

The Lake Turkana National Parks include Sibiloi National Park and the national parks on South Island and Central Island. Together with the Kaya Forests and the Kenya Lake System, these examples demonstrate the diversity of nature and cultural heritage themes across the wider destination of Kenya.
